Offline Mode (without actual book files accessible)

I use calibre a lot, but was wondering if there was a way to see my book database without having access to the actual books. I use a portable hard drive with all the books, can I just hold the database on my flash drive and the books on the portable hard drive or will this damage the files or database. I just always have the flash drive, but not the portable one, and this would let me edit stuff on the go.

I do this on Media monkey and it's great, bc it updates the files when I plug the portable file in. Also, i have 6 libraries I"m working on and trying to consolidate, if I can use the database without the portable drive, and I consolidate two databases, will thefiles be moved after when I plug in the hard drive again? |

No if you modify your database the book locations are simultaneously modified, so you must have both available at once.
