Jon,

I make my lit files with BookDesigner 5.0, which has options for covers and ToC's. If you want to go the pay route, Overdrive Readerworks is still out there.

Hm, if you right click and Save Link As, it's there and it works. I don't quite know why you (and I) get the Page Not Found error when regular-clicking it. That doesn't happen with the other versions, and I can't see what the difference is. I've just tried reloading everything, and the problem is still there.

Anybody have any ideas on this?

What I get when I right-click and save-as is the HTML of the "page-not-found" page. NOT, sadly, the .lrf file. Occam's razor suggests that the simplest explanation is that the link really is broken...

I just did it again, on a different computer, and got the LRF file.

I'm on a PC. Are you guys on PCs or Macs? Could an underscore in the folder name cause trouble? (It's in Sony_LRF.)

Just tested here on a PC, and it's not working. Firefox downloaded a (lrf) file on a right-click "save link as", but it's only 2K. I got a "not found" error when clicking directly on the link. Internet Explorer gave that error in either case.

The underscore shouldn't be a problem. Something else is going on (wrong case, perhaps?)...but doesn't explain why it's working for you. Hmmm.....

I'm one that's thrown off your download stats because I've downloaded 3 versions now.

I was confused when I received the Fictionwise email with "The Sunborn" by Gregory Benford in the 100% Micropay rebate section. I didn't catch the author name at first and thought it was out already. I'm easily confused though.

I figured it out eventually.

Yeah, I discovered I'd downloaded a 2K file, too.

I created a whole new folder and reuploaded, starting from the version of the file as it came from Jon. Changed the link. Same result.

I'm starting to wonder if there's something in the file.

Lemme try something. Someone else, out of the blue, emailed a LRF file he'd made, right after I'd uploaded Jon's. I'm going to try putting that one in, and see what happens...

Same thing! The file loads fine in my viewer, then I upload it to the server, change the link, and get the same result. When I Save As, I get a 2K file.

Stumped...

I tried changing the extension. No joy.

The code looks fine. I wonder, though... Is the file actually present at that location with that name? The error I get makes it look as though it's missing, misnamed, misplaced, or otherwise just plain not found.

I'll have to ask my hosting service, but there must be something about the LRF file format that causes a problem.

Anyway, somebody please test and tell me if it works for you, too!

The zip downloaded fine with both left & right click. I can't vouch for the actual lrf since I don't have a Sony, but it unziped okay and both files are 888k.

Yeah, the zip downloads fine.

I wouldn't think the server setup would be a problem -- when right-clicking and saving the link target, the content-type setup on the server doesn't come into play (I don't think -- better webmasters than I would know for sure).

Could it be a problem with uploading the LRF (is it being properly being sent as a binary file rather than text -- and does the file size after upload look right)?

I'd probably stick with zip unless you like solving puzzles

Well, FTP indicated a binary upload, and yes the files all looked right after the upload.

Anyway, if zip works, then it ain't broke anymore, and I'm not going to fix it. (Not tonight, anyway. Though I did shoot a query to my stalwart support person.)

Could it be a file extension issue - something to do with how LRF files are handled?
(According to http://filext.com/file-extension/LRF - LRFs are Linker Response Files as well as BBeB files.)

I wondered about something like that. I tried changing it to .LRF_ but that didn't help. Nor did calling it Neptune Crossing_LRF without an extension. My first clue, though, was putting a text file there, and that did work. That's when I thought of trying the zip.

What web server are you using? Since LRF isn't a standard file that you would download from a web site you may need to set up a mime type on the server to allow that type of file to be served. Http servers are different than FTP servers. They have security to only allow certain file types to be served.
