is this device still going to be a windoze, or is it going to have an OS that actually works well and effectively?

This isn't new, this is old, it actually is as old as the idea of ePaper altogether. I just wonder what real practical implication it has? Having some soft something on your knees doesn't work as cool as it sounds. Even with conventional paper, what do you do? Well you use a hard back to have a useful pad.

I take it you've never tried a device that runs Windows CE? It easily beats Linux in the handheld market.

Therre aren't any serious Linux handhelds... but Palm still beats Windows CE on the PDA market... and yes I had a Windows CE PDA... and I hated it. On the mobiles its a question of which companies run after which products, not intrinsic traits of the OS.

PalmOS hasn't beaten anything in the PDA market in the last 2 years (at the very least).

And the reason there are no serious Linux handhelds is that it is easier to develop for Windows.

As developer of embedded devices I tell you this is nonsense. Why have many people outside the eInk world decided for windows? Well because they grew up with it, and they rather continue to use what they used as kid, instead of learning something new. Even tough it would be more effective once you grasped its concepts...

There is no advantage of windows to use it for say a cash dispense (seen it) but the stubborness of developers.

if you use a flexiscreen why not do it rollable like old papyrs :a double cylinder : in one ,you roll a A4 e paper page ; in the second cylinder you put all hard and software . Of course the A4 page must be readable in landscape and portrait format, opening the device orizontally or vertically.

And delay even more? Might work on a future product but it would take a lot more testing and A4 e-paper is not even available. 9.7" is not A4.

Great! Thank you for the answer!

After seeing the S1D13521 in action (on video only ), I decided to buy the first decent device based on the new controller. IMHO, you have a valid reason for waiting with the release.

I believe you got yourself a customer. If I manage to get one early, you will get a review in a Croatian IT magazine.

Btw, I will go for a 6" touchscreen & WiFi device. I even slightly prefer the Windows CE having development experience in Windows.

Btw, the new controller + touchscreen + WiFi = Web browser? Would be nice.

What about my other question? If you are using a layer based touch screen, is there a negative impact on the picture quality?

Thats exactly it. Its never because "it is better", its always "because I got already experience with it"; "we have already this or that application for it"... but never the tech is better, or I prefer to run a closed kernel on my device...

I could be wrong about this, but from what I've been able to gather the first generation of plastic logic displays won't actually be able to "roll". They're flexible enough not to crack when sheered, but that's their limit.

I thought that the "Readius" was using a PlasticLogic screen. Is it not doing?
