Hull, Edith M: The Sheik. V1. 16 Janaury 2013

I can't believe that his venerable old chestnut hasn't yet been posted here.

An enormous best-seller in its day (1921), it tells of a well-bred English girl who is abducted by an Arab Sheik. It was made into a spectacularly successful movie with the inimitable Rudolf Valentino as the Sheik.

It is also the subject of an S J Perelman piece in the New Yorker entitled "Into your Tent I'll Creep", one of his hilarious "Cloudland Revisited" series.

The text is based on the Gutenberg edition, with the addition of a TOC, and a cover (which incorporates part of the original hardback cover art).

Immortal lines:

"Why have I brought you here? You ask me why? Mon Dieu, are you not woman enough to know?"
