Day to day reading
I commute mostly on public transit and my current Kindle does fine for that however I am thinking that my first generation fire could also help out with my day to day book reading. The biggest issue here is the fact that the fire's battery needs to be able to keep me going for a minimum of five hours a day. I also side load a most of books as I appear to be addicted to two book publishers who rather not sell their books via amazon and instead like to sell their books on their own site, so I need to side load these.

Shouldn't be a problem. I get 12 hours out of mine. In standby it uses practically no battery at all. Just keep WiFi off when not using it. My KF can go on one charge in Standby for nearly two weeks if I let it.

Lower your screen brightness as well using the great "ScreenDim" app to extend your battery life. Its better on your reading eyes as well
