I have to agree with kovidgoyal and with Sparrow. I've always wished for a computer "smart" enough to mentally digest several books (or movies), capture the main generalities and create a new story in that general style (as per Sparrow).

And when you read a book you are moving text via your eyes into concepts in your brain. Why not simply go directly from book to brain. I don't mean that the book "pushes" the concepts but that you "pull" the concepts. Just think of all the significant others we wouldn't disturb while reading 9in this manner) in bed. Maybe we could "multi-task" even more than now where we can input data to the brain via both ears and eyes. With the direct connection we would have a third type of input to the brain.

Take those ideas and go one step (or a couple) further. Get into a sensory deprivation chamber and turn on your neural input/mood sensing story customizer/ebook. As you "read", the chamber picks up on your sensory output and projects it. You get to see the scenes and characters in the book based on your mental interpretation.

Once upon a time, that was called a "parent."

A hologram of my mommy sitting at my bedside reading me stories.

... scratch that. I don't need an image of my mother reading the books I like now.

OK. A hologram of random Victoria Secret models reading books to me. Of course it would need to be encrypted so only I could hear and see it or I would get in all kinds of trouble.

(Did you catch that Google Ads? Victoria Secret models!)

Sorry... the ads I get only include "17 secrets of the wealthy."

(I think we know where the Victoria's Secret models are going. Ka-ching!)

How 'bout we switch the holograms of Victoria's Secret models with pleasure droids of Victoria's Secret models? Then they can read the phone book, for all it matters...

(What's that? No, I didn't say anything, honey. Go back to sleep...)

You & Steve both missed the point. There will be no need for "seeing" or "hearing". Data will flow directly to the brain without bothering the ocular or auditory nerves, thus leaving them free for other tasks - i.e. true multi-tasking.

Sort of like the Halo in Steve's book, "The Mirror Cracks." I want one of those.

as so the data will flow from brain cell to brain cell leaving the semblance of a
idea for the mind to say "whatwasthatImisseditplayitagainsam"...

Not for me. I already have problems with too much input, just with the senses I have. I'm afraid I wasn't designed for multitasking.
