Not that I am calling anyone a liar, but...

If RobertB says the 9.7 release will be in the spring, then I will believe it. Otherwise, to me, it's simply hear-say.

Here's hoping it will see at least a Christmas release, if not sooner.

Well ... there goes my hope of a device with touchscreen in the near future.
Quote:
The initial 6 inch Mentor will be a fabulous machine... light weight, ergodynamic, and thin as a pencil. It will not have Touchscreen or WiFi on the first version... but it will run fast, have excellent features, and will be the lightest and easiest and most enjoyable way to read a book.

Two questions for RobertB, if he would be so kind:

1. Will the Astak Mentor use the new Epson screen controller (S1D13521)?

2. Is there an impact on the screen quality (e.g. contrast) on the TouchScreen models?

I haven't really checked the whole thread so my apologies in advance if this has been asked/answered already.

Where have you found that?
Was waiting for the 6" Mentor mainly because of the touchscreen.

HOORAY!! YES... someone understands WHY we are waiting to release.

The latest controller in the world is the Epson screen controller. It will be released in early October. I didn't want to say that our Mentor/LiteBook are slow... but to me there was a noticeable lagtime between command and response. Yes, we are getting the latest Epson controller and we cannot rush Epson. Expect October release from Epson! This controller is what the eBook world has waited for. It is blazingly fast and that is the whole idea.

ONCE Epson releases the latest controller we can start the final porting and really get going. It is worth the wait!

OK: 9.7 inch... everybody on earth wants it. We are waiting on more than the Epson for this... we have the Screen Cracking problem. The size is such that any twisting of the unit might cause the screen to crack. This is inherent, it turns out, is screens of this size. Our design is not at fault... the size causes this. The answer is the FlexiScreen and that has passed development. NOW, they have to figure out how to go into full-scale manufacturing with a burn rate that is acceptable. Nobody will build screens with a 30% failure rate. So, they need to engineer the line and equipment to do it with a decent success rate. It IS coming...but look for the 9.7 inch realease to be about March, 2009. We are also looking at adding note-taking interactivity to it using supersonic pen triangulation technology. This is because every university demands that in the device.

Stop the presses!

Will you have on-board handwriting recognition? And (please say yes) on Linux? VisionObjects seems to be quite close with the code-- they have single-line handwriting recognition on the iLiad (using Linux), and full-page recognition of the iLiad-generated files on the PC. I wrote to them last year to ask if they'd be interested in porting their full-page solution to the iLiad, and they seemed to be waiting for a bigger market. If you're going to tackle the university market, you may be just what they've (and I've) been waiting for.

Very cool.

But now I'm curious whether this also means that the devices will also support more shades of gray than initially reported? (My, admittedly limited, understanding was that the new controllers can support up to 4bit "depth")

Oh, and even though I'm a bit tardy, I'd like to thank you for your earlier reply.

Thanks RobertB for the news. I'm still very eager to get that 9.7, and all the changes seems me well worth the wait (high quality touchscreen and a faster drawing are what I miss in the current gen, and missed in the previous spec). The 9.7 will really end up being extremely useful for students all around the world, quite a niche to fill. I will now, as a prophet, declare that this will be the breakthrough that has been hanging in the air since eInk-tech was developed.

Good news! I'm eagerly waiting for the 9.7in unit. Then I will have small, light and portable Cybook to read novels and a bigger & faster Astak for Manga/Comic and PDF reading.

I just hope that the flexiscreen, epson controller and touchscreen capabilities won't make the device too expensive.

hallo here after long time ...
to Mr Robert
if you use a flexiscreen why not do it rollable like old papyrs :a double cylinder : in one ,you roll a A4 e paper page ; in the second cylinder you put all hard and software . Of course the A4 page must be readable in landscape and portrait format, opening the device orizontally or vertically.
