PERFECT!

This is the device I have been waiting for!

-Battery life measured in page turns
-Reader for major book formats
-Touch screen (Please include a notetaking app!!!)

God, I hope it really happens- I have been waiting for this device for so long- almost bought an overpriced Iliad even despite the fact that the battery life makes it useless to me.

THANK YOU!

Robert, for quite a while we've been discussing the idea of being able to subscribe to book clubs via an ebook reader. Any chance you folks could open up negotiations with the Science Fiction Book Club, Mystery Guild, etc.? If you're able to offer a lower priced reader than the rest of the market and you can tie it in with club membership somehow, that could be a strong foot in the door for you folks.

With the 9,7" Astak, I could finally have a viable way to read manga. I will buy it (at a reasonable price) mainly for that. I just hope it will have a nice folder support. ZIP/CBZ/CBR support would be a big plus!

A good PDF support will be important too. I bet most people that are interested in the bigger screen just for making PDF reading possible.

I am another one waiting patiently on these to come out.
As long as I can read PDFs from free online books such as Project Gutenberg or be able to read PDFs or such I reformat to size myself using Open Office, etc, then I will be happy.
Price (then features and compatability) are the main things for me, that and supporting the only viable and affordable contender for making full paper-sized screens (very necessary for me down the line).

In other words, count me in, and where can I log a preorder to get this moving?

Mistress nekokami, you bring up a tantalizing thought. I have been a member of the Science Fiction Book Club for decades, but I haven't actually purchased anything from them in many years, because I am now pretty much digital book centric.

A couple of years ago SFBC ran an "article" in their mailer (actually it was response from a member) about carrying ebooks. Their response was basically that they were paper book club, and that was just how it was.

I still wish they find a way to use their purchasing power to open up an avenue for ebook distribution. That would be fantastic.

Hell, it would be better than fantastic!

I wrote to them last year and they said the same thing... but they may be starting to re-think that policy, with the publicity the Kindle has been getting. They'd have to re-negotiate contracts with publishers, though, which is probably one of the big holdups.

Are you talking about the 9.7" model? That's not going to appear before next spring at the earliest.

comic books in .zip, .rar, .cbr and .cbz definitely won't be supported if they don't know much about it. astrak people are quite receptive to suggestions and ideas. you should try e-mailing them and they do reply. hopefully they looked into supporting songbird too. would definitely make a nice player too instead of just reading... audio books or music in the background while reading with sdhc support...

The hold up is apparently in the manufacture of the screens. So all 9.7" screen devices are on hold. In addition to Hanlin and Astak/Netronix, there are already (sketchy) reports of a device from Amazon next spring and Bookeen and iRex are also likely to offer devices too. Presumably Sony has at least thought about this screen size.

really? Do you have a reliable source?

Was only about a week ago, and though being quite vague, this doesn't even begin to suggest a delay so severe.
