I can't agree with you there, I'm afraid. Although most of what I read is indeed fiction, I also very much enjoy travel writers (eg Bill Bryson), and also biographies (Peter Ackroyd in particular). Bill Bryson is one of the funniest writers I know of.

While reading fiction, I love having all the characters in my head and playing out the action. It's more compelling.
That's exactly the appeal of 'creative' non-fiction which I've been reading a lot of lately. Not only can it fire up your imagination and thoughts but you walk away like you've been punched in the gut because it was actually REAL!

And Mary Roach! She's hilarious as well as informative.

Thanks for the recommendation; I haven't come across her. Are there any of her books in particular that you'd recommend?

Any and all... Seriously, she's a funny and informative writer.

My favorites have been Packing for Mars, Stiff, and Bonk.

Maybe not for everyone but I loved (and it affected my perspective on)

"Stiff" - http://www.amazon.com/Stiff-Curious-...rds=mary+roach

You might enjoy "Packing for Mars" - I've not read it though

I had never heard of her either. I thank you, although my wallet won't.
