Calibre. I really, really, do. And that's why I post. I use it a whole lot. Probably 5-30 books a day, converting, downloading metadata, all that I know to do with the wonderful program. I do it because I'm so old I poot dust; my wife loves to read (2-3 books a day), my kids love to read (6@ 1/2 or so days), I love to read (1/2 days,) my relatives love to read (give 1 - 2/wk), and when I leave this ol' earth, I want them to be able to enjoy the library that I've taken time to amass.

I say again: there's absolutely no better software for which it is designed than Calibre. Mr. Kovid Goyal and his peers have shown the world what can happen should people actually care about what they do. Please name me, just one, anyone, piece of software that gets as much attention and revision to suit user needs as does Calibre? Just once, I asked if there was a 64-bit Calibre to fit the advantages of the better processors and additional RAM that most modern computers employ. Guess what: lest than 60 days later (doubt I was the cause) there was a new 64-bit version.

Now that being said, just reporting here, mind you! I just downloaded 45 books, myriad formats (*.mobi, *.epub, *.azw, *.azw3?.....bunchadifferentfiletypes.... when I was converting them all to *.mobi, my system only used 3.02 of 16 GIG's of memory while using 100% of 4-cores of processor. Mind you, I'm not complaining: just reporting. I'm sure others wring-out the capabilities, regularly, of this wonderful software. (I also included Mr. Abe's li'l bitty ol' helps,) but, maybe you can use the report to tweak what I KNOW you folks wish to be the utopia of software to make e-book reading and conservativeship the norm for everyone interested in the genre.

Using more RAM is not going to affect CPU load, the calibre conversion process alreay keeps the entire book text in RAM during a conversion. If you want to reduce CPU load, go to Preferences->Miscellaneous and reduce the number of simultaneous jobs.

Would there be any benefit in running Calibre with Linux 64-bit in a virtual machine? Or would the same still apply?
