For some reason I didn't think German used all 26 letters of the Latin alphabet. I must be thinking of another language.
The Swedish keyboard isn't all that different from the German. I switch between Swedish, English (US) and Japanese keyboards. Well, the Japanese is completely different, so leave that aside. When I switch between English and Swedish my main problem is the ' character. On Swedish it is ä which is a common letter and it sits next to the \ which of course has ' on the key, so these two tend to get mixed up now and then. Ex. can\t instead of can't.

Yes, I mistype all the time, and I go back and forth between languages on my laptops and tablets, so switching the layout wouldn't be viable
It would be cool if I could design my own layout.

Hey, i didn't even know we had a spelling reform.

Surely that's possible? Details depending on the OS of your choice, obviously, but probably possible in any case. (This should get you started for Windows.)

When in denmark, i had switch to french layout, or I was always mistyping a/q z/w and all.

Caused a few "What the hell ???" from my boss when he tried using my keybord.

Hmmmm, I'd need to put little stickers on the laptop keys to remember what's what, but, yeah... it's a start.
Or, they could ship laptops with with eink below transparent keys. How cool would that be!?

Not sure if there is something for non jailbroken iPads, Nexus 7s, but I never really looked.

I just stick to the Estonian layout regardless of the physical keyboard.

Most of the physical keyboards I use have always come with a physical Swedish layout (the closest you can get to ours with the majority of "special" keyboards, i.e. anything with extra keys or buttons - my work requires a LOT of copying and pasting, so I've been using keyboards that have physical single cut, copy and paste buttons on them), but I just don't look at what the right hand side keys are marked as.

Same with laptop keyboards - for Western brand name laptops, Swedish physical keyboards are the closest you can get, so again I use those with an Estonian software layout. It's much handier than switching all the time, as I have all the letters and symbols I need regularly within easy reach.

I'd think sticking to the software layout of the language you're used to is the best option regardless of what language you actually type in at any specific moment - for languages using more or less the same alphabet, of course. Can't really get by without switching when one needs to switch to a language with a different alphabet (e.g. from Latin to Cyrillic) or a completely different writing system.

I used to have my keyboard set for Swedish and then use that when typing English, with the exception of Word because the auto-correct would begin to go insane. Unfortunately, under Win 8 that function is now global, so unless I switch keyboard language I get all this red wavy underlining.
