Paperwhite memory woes
When I first heard about the lower memory on the PW I was unhappy but I figured that it was the sacrifice that I had to make for the lit screen. Now, for the second time, I have to remove books from the reader in order to fit an upgrade. This is really annoying. I don't want the amazon cloud. I want local storage and will not last past the first generation of this device if they don't offer a higher capacity reader.

How many books do you have on it? I just loaded 299 classical books on my old K4NT (will be given to my aunt as a present) which has the same 2GB as the PW, and it is still not full!

I've never ever had that problem. To me the memory capacity is totally a non-issue. I was always able to manage my collection. I was never a proponent of keeping hundreds of books on my Kindle. |

Are the books really large in size, or something?

If you use it for PDF viewing then that can eat the space up pretty quickly.

I just checked. I have 553 items and 167mb free. No PDFs. I just like to carry lots of books. The old memory size seemed to work better for me although a memory card slot would be fantastic.

I have over 1300 books on my PW, albeit, some are novellas or short stories. I have about 100MB free.

are any of these comic books/manga etc? those can chew up space fast.
And you start with about 1.2 GB, not 2 GB. Kindle Touch starts out with about 3.3GB (if I remember), so more than twice as much, almost 3x more. |

My PW does not delete past issues of subscriptions (some bug, I guess... Amazon CS can't figure it out) and I am too lazy to do it manually.
So I have about 2.5 months of WSJ, FT, Economist, Foreign Policy on it. Add some gamebooks (Lone Wolf and Final Fantasy) and about 30 books - and I am out of memory as well. Annoying, I'd say, especially as it is due to a bug - the autoarchiving of periodicals not working. |

Why so many items?
Quote:
My 34 items include 4 dictionaries (I use 2 at once), 3 personal documents, 6 Bible Study items and 21 eBooks (I read 2 simultaneously). I leave the rest on to browse highlights I made in them. Even if you have magazines and newspapers on, you should delete old issues when done. I store all my eBooks and apps on my KFHD7-32 where I have 21 Gb still available for extra storage. The PW can never match the KFHD7-32 in storage space since it starts out with 27 Gb available. Last edited by sirmaru; 12-18-2012 at 10:16 AM. |

^ The OP states that he prefers on-device storage over cloud storage.

It's fair to prefer it that way, but I assume that for the vast majority of users, 2GB + Cloud will be enough.
I have a similar problem with tablets/phones which have limited memory capability and no external storage such as SD cards as I would prefer always having my whole music collection with me. It's something that I'll have to live with if I ever have to get such a device (still using my HTC Desire with an SD Card and don't own a tablet). Personally, I've got my whole ebook library (which is at about 180 books or something) sitting in my Dropbox in addition to it being on the kindle. That way, I have access to it pretty much wherever I have a PC with an Internet connection, preferably with Calibre (and it's also a great way to have your library in sync without ever worrying about it if you use machines in different locations). |
