Without at all offering any premise that I have empathy with even the slightest degree of parity with your suffering...yeah, you tell it to the man, brother!

Perhaps it means the limits of their specific knowledge has been reached, but, being doctors of a particular type, they don't want to admit that and so imply to themselves that the problem is somehow of your doing, which then comes out in the way they word things. Sucks, and maybe you can help reiterate the symptoms to them in the form you offer for the "next person that asks you" (no, I'm not really suggesting that ~smile~). I can't stomach it when you tell people something is wrong (and this goes for anything) and they say "well, I can't find anything wrong/duplicate the symptoms" as if that's an answer. That's not an answer; it's a failure. I hope you find some better help at the Mayo Clinic.

THAT's my VENT and RANT for the day. I cannot convey the level of frustration and even anger at having to endure constant pain, and having a neurosurgeon who doesn't want to operate and a neurologist who says he can't do anything else for me "medically". Meaning, what? I'm imaging things? The next specialist I see who asks me to describe the pain, I will punch as hard as I can in the face, and say "Like THAT, plus a toothache... and I'm not imagining it."
I'll join in on this one too, although to be fair my actual doctor has been lovely and sympathetic. Unfortunately it'll be up to six weeks left (from 18) before my neurology referral comes through, I have to go for another set of blood tests in the meantime (the first ones showed 'heightened white cell count' so now they need to establish whether whatever infection it was is coming or going - does it matter if it's unrelated to the headaches?)
On the plus side, the more-or-less spaced feeling is keeping work interesting and the fact I'm forgetting sentences half-way through is....
... where am I?
Seriously though, pain is bad. And very, very exhausting.

Hey, we seem to have a pattern here, maybe e-Ink or MRF is messing with our DNA or opening up unused parts of our brains and in a couple of years time we'll all have morphed into superheroes. Or super-llamas. Or something cool, anyway.

You give me entirely too much credit for subtlety. I'm happy to play the robot, especially since Zee-Zee found me an awesome Dr. Demonto song to play.

Oh, I love that song!

Taylor, while not suggesting in any way that your symptoms are not fully real and very painful, have you considered biofeedback? Sort of as a "take back your nervous system" strategy. I've had good luck with it personally regarding pain (and stress) management, and so have quite a few others, some of whom have had symptoms and diagnoses similar to what you're describing.

I have damage to the trigeminal cranial nerve as a result of a head injury about 15 years ago. My recent frustration was due to having perhaps unjustified high expectations. I did another round of CT and MRI scans, and was hoping to hear "ah, yes, here is the problem, tap tap tap, and this is what I can do to fix it."

I heard instead, "The operation I would do would be a vascular decompression, because anything else just isn't indicated. Plus, the operation would be in large part exploratory, because imaging technology... blah blah blah". Then he concluded, "I don't suggest this. Come back to me as a last resort, if the condition worsens and becomes unbearable. Go back to your neurologist, manage it with medication."

Upon reflection, that was an honest, reasonable suggestion - just not the one I wanted to hear!

Very sorry to hear that mate, I have some understanding of what it must be like for the pain from the trigeminal cranial nerve 'cause my wife suffered for a long while during a year long spell of chemo and radiotherapy...
There is not a lot else I can offer except 'keep your chin up' (not easy I know)....keep posting and we shall try and keep you amused with lots of silliness...

And white matter damage, but that is unrelated. Just a ball of fun, aren't we?

Hypnosis can go a long way toward relief of pain. Especially someone with your mental capacity. Anyone who can learn how to draw in a matter of weeks has a very strong hypnotic capacity. I have had some really good results workign with patients who have neuralgias secondary to a lot of different things. Look for someone who is a member of ASCH, since there are a lot of "hypnotists" out here who should really be shot, then hung.

Shooting... hanging... Nail 'em up, I say! Nail some sense into 'em!

Er.

I recommend a computer game/program called "The Journey to Wild Divine." Sort of like Myst, only the puzzles are solved with biofeedback exercises. Only about 3x the cost of a typical new computer game. You can get it from http://wilddivine.com or eBay usually has cheaper copies.

And I'm very sorry to hear about your injury, and subsequent difficulties obtaining adequate treatment.
