Frankly, the only thing I use my tablet (ipad) for is reading academic papers - PDFs. About 2 hours a day, I would say, on average. The exception is when i use it to review textbooks. Magazines, newspapers, and books all go to my e-ink devices. None of this is what I would characterize as 'wasting time'. Now this, this is wasting time. Would you suggest I ditch my PC? |

For me my iPad is indispensable. I use it to create preliminary art sketches for my job, I do most things on it that I used to do on my laptop. Instead of having a cell phone with the accompanying bill, I pay 30 dollars a month for unlimited(yes I'm grandfathered in) and I have unlimited texting and even have a phone app that I can use when I absolutely need to talk to someone.

I also do the normal browsing and occassional video watching too. It is much more comfy to browse from my couch than my office chair. I bring my iPad instead of my laptop on trips which saves a bag as I just stuff it in my purse. As for reading, I have a dedicated ereader, a kindle, that I won't trade for the world. I actually bring both wherever I go. So for me, my tablet is most certainly not a waste of time. It helps pay the bills, is my communication when I'm out and also is my entertainment when I am not reading on my kindle. To each their own I guess. Oh and by the way, I am typing this from my iPad on my couch

Well, after reading this thread I can hardly wait to get my cheap Chinese tablet (a 10" device for about £180 including import duty) and waste some time this winter (well, when I say my tablet I mean my wife's but we share things...).

I won't read on it (as I have my Glo) but I plan to watch some videos (especially trailers), check things out on the Net and maybe even play an occasional game. |

I find reading PDFs on my computer to be uncomfortable due to the cumbersome form factor of the laptops that I have owned. I find that I have a much easier time reading PDFs and making notes on my iPad. I am also able to use a stylus to make notes (something that I can't do on my laptop), which is very handy as my notes often involve diacritics that are a pain to type using a keyboard. It is small enough that I can slip it into my purse and use it while commuting as well, something that I couldn't do with a laptop. It has saved me a of time while writing my MA and PHD theses, and has also served as a very handy second screen for viewing reference material when typing on my laptop. My iPad was a purchase that was well worth the money spent.

The natural orientation of most PDFs is portrait. The natural orientation of most computer monitors is landscape. In order to fit an entire page on screen, you waste most of the real estate. A high resolution tablet is a more natural way to read a PDF.
