Ooh. I was wondering which of Sheffield's novels from my Baen bundle I wanted to start with once I'd gone through his short story collections. CAI sounds exactly like my sort of thing, thanks!

Apparently they might be able to set me up with a new Dec 2005 code after I botched it while buying yesterday. I've just gone and bought a Fairwood Press bundle from them in thanks.

Also, Sheffield is generally supposed to be pretty good if you do like hard sci-fi (apparently he also wrote some softer, more social sci-fi as well; I've only read a few of his works). He was an actual physicist while he was still alive, and married to Nancy Kress, who's a Hugo/Nebula Winner. It's actually because I liked her stories so much that I started looking into his work.
Well, could not combine micropay w/ CC for one purchase, so grabbed a Night Shade title I was missing. I'll grab Sheffield, too, most likely.

pm me if the Dec 2005 bundle is active (I put all the 'completed' threads on ignore, so i could keep track).

Bundles will continue, but there is a lot of confusion about what tonie posted - look like you are buying three chunks of HTML, no finished editions and have to stitch them together (and only last third will be final proofed/edited). Both are deal-breakers for me - I never read the html early portions and ignore all bundles until complete and download the finished books. I don't pay for eArcs (even though I know some who do .. even one in this house, no matter how many times I tell him to get the bundle, instead).

She later posted that at least for now bundles would stay the same (getting the finished book), but would just go off sale once the books had been published to Amazon (and other stores).

Good, because I tried to wade thru the thread and gave up (and the last few messages must have been written prior to that announcement).

I just checked Baenebooks and the bundles are not available, and the ebook prices are up.

Well, at least we got an extra day and a half more than we thought we would, which did help some of our overseas MR-goers to pick up things.

Unfortunately, it looks like the much older e-books for which there is no paper edition will simply be flat-out unavailable for the forseeable future (and will probably see a very significant price-hike from their original $4-5 if they show up via Amazon at all).

On the other hand, Baen's own non-monthly reprint bundles and recent single releases do seem to be available and unaffected by the price hikes, for now.

Feeding Frenzy - aftermath

Just went through all my downloaded zips and extracted the files. I participated in 22 gift chain threads for a total of 38 bundles. The gross count was 241 books and after allowing for duplicates 199 net books. There will be another chunk of those that I already had from the CD's.

Now comes the tedious part of importing them into calibre and going through and updating all the metadata with series information (unless someone knows of a plugin that will do it ?).

I went back and threw some karma points at everyone (I think) that started a gift thread in the last few days. Thanks everyone!

I refuse to look.

I know I had roughly $168 in coupons when I started (and none when I was done ... and i think I still bought one or two after that).

I'm all set if the monster snow storm hits and we are stranded with no internet for a week (or a year, although we'll then run out of fuel and food).

I had 16 coupons and I used them all on gift bundles. And I also bought other stuff for myself both before and after.

PS. Baen just took down the CDs downloads which came with certain e-book bundles.

I was downloading some that I had missed, just to double check, but am pretty sure I had a complete set of the books, from when they allowed showing the contents of each CD.
