I wholeheartedly agree!

Okay, so I twisted most of your words. The fact of the matter is that a tablet is a tool. Any tool could be spent for productive or counterproductive uses. Take a hammer: it can be used for building houses, or vandalizing them. A car can be used for transportation, or it could be used for Sunday drives.

I use my table to check email because that's how I keep in touch with friends and family. Yes I watch videos on it, but they tend to be lectures and documentaries. As for reading, my ereader tends to be used for entertainment books (novels and such) while my tablet tends to be used for information books (manuals, government documents, news).

Yes, I use a tablet for entertainment too. Entertainment is a good thing, as long as it doesn't take over your life.

Why do you believe that consuming text media is more noble than consuming visual or audible media?

In other words, why is viewing a movie a waste of time but reading a book not?

The studies that have been done indicate that reading is more mentally stimulating than movies or music.

Can you point to these studies? I would be interested as to why reading is more mentally stimulating, not to mention which variables they controlled (since books tend to have more depth than movies or music).

Are you implying that reading a book doesn't count as entertainment?

After being a die-hard e-ink proponent for years, I am very pleased with my Nexus 7. I've had it for a few weeks, and I've spent more time with it reading ebooks than anything else so far. It does come in handy for the quick email read, some messaging, task lists/calendars and occasional web browsing. I use it at work as I travel from site to site. I don't really use it for movies; I'd much rather watch a movie on my HD TV anyway. Aside from ebooks (which are in essence "time wasters" and "entertainment") I use it for mostly productive purposes.

As far as reading goes, with a black background, light text and low backlight it's not all that bad. Certainly FAR better than the displays of yesteryear or my computer for reading. I'm looking forward to trying a Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 for the AMOLED screen.

With a book, you sit on your butt and play with words. Unhealthy (only healthy for your mind). Wait, so can playing with the internet be!

I hate reading on a laptop. You try reading from a laptop when you're in bed without waking your partner.

Actually, if I liked shiny stuff, I'd have the latest of the latest. Which I don't. I have a tablet which fits perfectly with my reading habits. And has some extra nice features which I started using after I got the tablet (I got it mainly for reading) such as a real pen and not one of those capacitive thingies. Which means I can use it to really write with, make notes, and easily highlight my books.

I hate shopping. That's why I try to do it twice a year, summer clothes and winter clothes. The rest of my shopping is mostly done online, from behind a PC, not my tablet. I think the screen is too small for easy shopping.

Yes, but the same as above, you try to bring you PC to the couch or bed.

And I do have a laptop. And I do have a PC. And I do have a tablet. I use each for what it was made: laptop for development, PC for games and general home internet use, tablet for reading, note taking, grocery shopping, and checking imdb/wikipedia while watching a movie on the couch. And most importantly, keeping contact with my mother (we wordfeud together and no, we cannot do a real game of scrabble, considering there's 1500km and three countries between us)

So, why are you wasting your time posting here instead of reading a book? Sounds like "do as I say, not as I do".

I have a tablet, and yes I use it frequently.

I use it when I'm not at the computer and want something portable. I also use it for reading digital comics, a task which no other device is as well suited. Laptops don't work for comics because the widescreen orientation runs counter to that of a comics page.

More to the point, I spent my money on a tablet because I wanted one and I don't care that some people don't think it's a wise choice or a good idea. I didn't spend their time or money on it.
