Amazon and Google start operations in Brazil (almost simultaneously!)

The global expansion of eBooks continues: Yesterday, Amazon and Google finally launched their online stores in Brazil. The Kindle will be the cheapest eReader in the country: R$299 (US$141).

Very good news. Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world, population-wise.

Interesting - the amazon store is really a kindle store. I quite like it! Nice clean design. How are the ebook prices on Brazilian terms - acceptable?

Hmm. Wish my search-fu were at all decent, but it seems like lately it's Kobo going into a market first, then Amazon follows to try and get in on the action...

That's right, Kobo gave the first step, and the Kobo Touch was officially put on sale yesterday, hours before Amazon and Google opened their eBook stores. Kobo have a partnership with Livraria Cultura, one of the largest bookstores in Brazil, which sells eBooks since 2008, but they generally cost more, compared to the offerings from Amazon.

Sounds like Amazon and Google had a knee jerk reaction, then. They may not have been 100% ready for the launch.

This may be more of a progression for Amazon than a reaction. The Kindle 2 and the DX were the first Kindles to be sold internationally in 2009. Since then, Amazon has been opening country specific Kindle stores (maybe a bit slowly but I don't know the logistics involved).
