Lithium Ion/polymer batteries have a point at which they, for the lack of a better term, "like" being stored and that happens to be around 40%-50%.

Oh! I wasn't really aware of that. That's good to know for future reference. Thanks!

So to conclude, as I have the Kindle 4 (which holds it's charge for 1 month) I need to charge it a bit every three weeks or so to keep about 40% charge in it, to keep the battery at the recommended level?

You can power off the Kindle completely for pressing the power botton for about ten seconds. Then its electricity will not be declined any more. Make sure not to leave it where is too hot or cold.

That's not correct. As has already been stated in this thread, there isn't any way of powering off the Kindle completely, all you are doing is putting it in sleep mode with a blank screen. It seems to be a slightly deeper sleep mode than putting it to sleep with the screensaver*, but it is still not completely off, and the battery will continue to drain, albeit slowly.

* I'm pretty sure I remember testing it out and discovering that if you buy a book from Amazon and send it directly to your Kindle while it is in sleep mode with the screensaver, when you switch it on your new book will be there waiting for you. However if you do the same thing but with the sleep mode and blank screen, the book will only start to download after you have switched the Kindle on (wi-fi left on in both cases obviously).

Yes, that's right. In sleep mode the Kindle will wake up every so often and attempt to talk to Amazon. In "blank screen" mode it doesn't do this.

So I'd guess it'd try to do the same thing even if you have the wi-fi switched off, and therefore would still use up slightly more battery life in the sleep/screensaver mode than sleep/blank screen mode even if you keep the wi-fi connection off?

Yes, I think that's probably true.

Yeah Blank is the way to go but you will still need to charge once a month on a K4. Just take it out every few weeks and turn it on briefly to check the battery status. Draining the battery completely is not a good thing. It can damage the battery so it's good to check everyone once in awhile where it's at.
