Check your archives or look at Manage Your Kindle on your Amazon account. Amazon has sent me several dictionaries, but I don't think they ever downloaded automatically to any of my Kindles. As you can see in the pic below, you can sort by author and all of the dictionaries will appear together:

Never mind. Pidgeon92 beat me to it.

Xendula,

You have to download the foreign language dictionaries from the cloud. As soon as I registered my PW approx. 10 foreign language dictionaries were added to my cloud booklist, including the RAE, which really is excellent. Once the dictionary is installed on the PW, it will be automatically selected when you read a book in its language. This behavior can be customized.

I too have been a SONY Reader buyer over the years. I've always praised Sony to all my friends.

When the Paperwhite came out I was immediately interested because finally Amazon came out with a black bezel frame that I liked and the background lighting interested me. I never liked their original white Kindles and the grey ones were a little nicer but Sony alway won out. The Sony T-1 downfall for me was reading all year with the black shiny bezel. The T-2 took care of that, but the Paperwhite was one step ahead of the game for the same price. So I bought into the Amazon market. I love the Paperwhite.

The real advantage I have discovered is when I am walking into the subway or a darken area, I can keep reading. I now find myself reading in areas where the light is was not enough for me to even bother pulling out my reader (say for example in a theater before the movie starts).

Trust me, I LOVE Sony but I am also a lover of gadgets. If next years model has more potential... I will move back to Sony... but in the meantime I'll be happily reading with my Paperwhite.

I too was a SONY user. My GF gifted me a KT a while ago but I never made a switch. I like it, a lot, but I did not care to 'switch ecosystems' and I liked the larger screen of my 950. Then my 950 died as the PW was released. So I ordered one. The screen isn't perfect and the battery-life is depressing, but I still love it.

Which brings me to the point: even if you read during the day, the screen light is great. Actually, that's when the PW really shines (<-- I am sure that pun has NOT been used before... yea... but I just couldn't resist). In the dark, the PW screen shows its limitations. The shadows on the bottom, the pink spots, whatnot. But during the day, in a well-lit room, when you can turn the brightness up, that's when my PW looks so much better than my KT, the PRS350, or even the now-defunct PRS950.

In short, even if you don't read at night, or in the dark, the light has its role.

That's odd. I'm getting about the same battery life on my PW as I was on my T1 reading about 2 hours a day with the light usually around 5 and wireless off. Both readers last between 2 and 3 weeks between charges.

That is good to know about the battery life. I assume that is after you set it up and use it only to read? Possibly vxf is still using too much battery by playing around with his PW? I noticed on my wifes KT (which still got that brand new gadget smell) that battery life is very poor. Not to worry as I figure it is because the library gets shuffled around, partly deleted, redownloaded almost daily. Result? It is not feasible to share a KT (at least not for us) - I will just have to bite the bullet and wait until it is possible to order me my own PW. I even seriously considered ordering a K4NTB, but the touch screen is so much easier to use. I am not going back a generation just because of a month's delay until PW can be bought again.

Compared to to the Kindle, my Sony feels like a cheap toy. To be fair though it is some generations behind and build quality and materials are excellent, just the navigation feels clumsy.

Well, I guess it depends what you construe as 'playing around'. I use my PW to read two newspapers (WSJ and FT) daily and The Economist every week. So I do a lot of browsing and jumping to articles. I am certain that leads to more page turns than just reading a book for the same amount of time.

Also, I get all of those delivered via 3g. So that hurts battery life as well.

Finally, I use the light at 12-14 at night and 18-20 during the day.

When you put it all together, it is probably as intense of a battery usage as it gets. But the result is that I get perhaps a dozen hours of reading between recharges. As I find it inconvenient to go home with a battery below 15-20%, as it did shut down on me before as I was trying to read, I pretty much end up recharging every other day. Actually, I think that has been very regular - ever since I got it, I have recharged one day yes, one day no.

Perhaps it is a defective unit. But I have read of others confirming similar experiences with 3g and subscriptions.

vxf, no, that is NOT what I meant with playing around. I thought you might be still checking your PW out, changing things - that kind of playing around. I noticed in my area, even though my phone has 4g with usually full bars, the whispernet coverage or speed is non-existant. What takes moments over wifi takes forever over 3g.

I will be using the PW only to read books, and maybe will turn wireless off - have to see how often it would need to be charged.

I'm still playing around with mine. I've charged it twice now excluding the charge you do when you first set it up. This is the results I've had so far.

Set up charge: 8 days, wifi off light on between 3-max 90 % of the time.
1st charge: 9 days (could have had longer), wifi off, light on between 3-max 90 % of the time
2nd charge: 6 days so far (40 % battery left), same usage as above

Thank you, that sounds good enough for me. The advertised 2 months is unrealistic if you like to read - and 30 minutes a day is not what I would consider wanting to read. On the other side advertising 30 hours won't give you peace of mind either - 30 hours over a period of 2 months is pretty good.

On the PW does it matter if you turn it off or put to sleep? I tried on my KT to turn off and after long pressing the display went white - assuming it turned off. Except when turning back on it almost imediately started back up and I am good to go. Makes me wonder if sleep mode uses no energy at all - other than the drag of battery you get naturally from it laying around doing nothing.

You can't turn off a Kindle (despite what the User Guide says ). You basically have sleep mode, or sleep mode with a blank screen. There is no "off".

Sleep mode uses an extremely small amount of power.

With 3G and Wifi on, I also get dozens of reading hours in between charges. It takes me typically 5-7 hours to get through a novel (I love time to read!!) , and I read a few books before I have to recharge.

Ah thank you for the insight. That sleep with white screen might be a good way for the PW to not wake up when opening the cover.
