Your title should read "front lit color e-ink is coming in 2013", it isn't here yet. But this is very interesting and 8" is a great size for an e-reader. Same as my Irex (unfortunately that one has developed a number of problems). Thanks for sharing.

I have edited the thread title. It is an interesting announcement, but it's is certainly not here yet.

Looks very promising, especially if the battery life is close to traditional e-ink. Considering this technology and IGZO, 2013 may be the year that color + long battery life finally come together in usable reading devices. Can't wait. --Pat |

The bezel is huge on that thing. Hopefully that's just a prototype and the final product is smaller and more portable.

June 2013 is about three tablet lifetimes away. I hope it can compete with the technology of the day.

Does sound like a nice idea for people reading certain non-fiction/reference books and magazines. I keep thinking I need something like that until I realise I'm probably just covering bases rather than submitting to a real need. |

They really don't have to, they won't expect to sell more than a few 100,000 units, anyway --- and don't expect this to cost less than $3-400. And unless Samsung brings a tablet with electro-wetting display to market by then all the others will still just be some variation of LCD/LED, so there is no real competition for a device like this. And this device will never competitive with regular tablets in the eyes of those who don't care about e-ink. Let us hope Amazon does something similar, then prices will come down to a reasonable level.

Its to resolution not good enough as its 8 inch otherwise I think it would be perfect for pdf files as well as college and school textbooks. Have to seen oneto be sure but even for comics the text wont be very good.

I keep waiting for the color eInk. Then they might be able to pry my keyboard Kindle from my fingers. Good color. Good contrast. Good black. Good white. Good battery life. Good resolution. Good Lord! |

I keep waiting for "unbreakable" plastic readers. Pocketbooks was to introduce them two years (or so) ago.

I do also wonder why the plastic substrates for e-ink haven't come out. I'm skeptical about this frontlit color e-ink. Those look like renders, not a real device. Hopefully they will show us the goods at CES. |

Note that the eInk Triton screen, as used in this device, is not a "genuine" colour screen, but rather a black and white screen with a colour mask in front of it. This accounts for the relatively poor resolution - the colour mask reduces the effective linear resolution by a factor of two. The colours have poor saturation. This is not going to be a game-changing device.
