Kindle Touch - 5.1.2 - Help!

Ok so yesterday I decided I wanted a custom screensaver which I soon regretted.

I jailbroke the kindle following the mobileread wiki. And then suddenly the kindle started showing ads instead of the standard screensaver and the banner below was also showing ads.

I then installed Launcher GUI and then used the ad toggle to banish the ads. I also have mobile patch installed and usbnet. Now when I lock the kindle there is no screensaver just the page I was on before locking so nothing changes it just locks it but with a transparent screensaver.

And now also when I power off the kindle the screen does not turn off it just stays on the same page, nothing changes.

I have no idea how to fix this.

Thank you

* The ads showing up right after you jailbroke the kindle is just coincidence. That was just when the kindle first had the ads pushed to it.

* The screen is always "off" except for the brief fraction of a second when it is changing.

The other questions, I have to leave for someone else.

There's a big fat warning at the top of the screensaver hacks thread for a reason.

Other than that and what knc1 said, showing the last thing on screen is the fallback behavior when there's no screensaver available, so everything is coherent given what you did.

Is there anyway to fix this? Or is this just the way it will stay? There is no way to add a screensaver after using ads toggle?

@Hullywood: I have no idea, nor do I really wish to look into it, to be perfectly honest (hence the big fat warning).

Ummm, well ok then. (I'm Hullywoods fiancé)
Just wish we had not done this now, all because I wanted a screensaver of my baby boy on it. :'(

Well, I do have a solution: there's a shiny 20$ button on your Manage Your Kindle page to kill the SO .

(Again, I don't have an SO KT, I'm not terribly interested in looking into it, and I'm not the author of the toggle, which IIRC is pretty low-level in how it tries to handle this. You might have better success with JBPatch, but I can't promise anything either.).

If you remove screensaver files or replace with empty files/folder, it falls back to showing what's already on the screen BUT you'll notice it (rightfully) will flood the "showlog -f" with complaints. Wouldn't it decrease battery life?

In fact, I want a transparent screensaver, as I want to see last page of my book all the time... but I hate those errors and warnings! Yikes.

@idoit: On which device? It's trivial on FW 5.x, and the ScreenSavers hack actually has that as a built-in feature.

DXG v2.5.8

I'm more concerned about battery and those produced logs of complaint though, as even with removing ss folders, I get what I want but...

So mode_last() is not supported on legacy devices?

Yes, I saw this for 5.*.

@idoit: The Kindle is already very, very verbose, so that's shouldn't be a *huge* issue, *unless* it prevents the device from sleeping. So, just check that it does really go to sleep, and you should be good.

(As for FW 5.x, no need to unearth anything .)

I never needed to install your SS because I always (even when I had my first Kindle) go with "No Special Ads" model to support Amazon - 30$ doesn't kill anyone!!! (as, all in all, I really like them as a company - you should give credit when it's due honestly)... So I didn't look at your code... for last page, are you doing a screenshot and using it as screensaver or ...?

Well, there is this but I'm not really fond of adding another process just for this purpose.

In case of DXG (well all FW v2.* Kindles), this can be done in a neater way by modifying sleep_screen() in /etc/rc.d/functions

@idoit: Err, what? ScreenSavers won't work on Special Offers device.

FW 5.x handles the alpha channel on screensavers, so we make good use of that.
