One of my favorites and a *must* read; easily one of the top-three SF novels of the 20th.
But...
...strictly speaking it's not military SF. Some of the protagonists are military, yes, but the story is a First Contact story, not *about* the military.

Spoiler:

The whole point of the ending is to *keep* the situation from becoming the responsibility of the military.
