The symptoms you describe (empty files) are of a particular bug in ConvertLIT. To get around it, convert the DRM-free file to HTML with calibre command-line tool 'lit2oeb'.

Dear Amy,

I don't know how to fix it, but I'm having the same problem with fictionwise lit books. I used the Amberlit converter--no problem. But now the files are empty as you say. I've stopped buying lit files for this reason!

I suspect it's an anti-pirating tactic--I might even sympathize if it didn't keep me from reading the books I purchased on my ebookwise!

I just downloaded and tried a previously purchased lit title from Fictionwise and had no problems with it whatsoever.

Fictionwise

I am worried that it was a new anti-pirating thing. I have about 10 other .lit files that I converted without trouble, its just this newest one. Well next week a new ebook comes out that I know will be in secure format. So we shall see then!

I am not sure what other secure file format is relatively easy to convert.

PDF files can be converted but in my experience the results are not nearly as good as what I have gotten with the Convert Lit program.

It was "Into the Shadow" by Christina Dodd. It is a recent release. Next week the next book in the series comes out.

You can use lit2oeb or the version of ConvertLIT that comes with Calibre to expand into it's component parts. I have tried it with this very same eBook and lit2oeb says it's trying the Penguin OPF fix and ConvertLIT just does it. And yes, it does work. Use the command line to do this. Do not use the ConvertLIT GUI or the Calibre GUI.

I hadn't had a chance to look until this morning, but after seeing the title, I realized I only had read the first two books in the series last year; I was not aware a third was out, and it sounds right up my alley, so I bought it.

I can confirm that ConvertLIT does have a problem exploding this lit file, however, Calibre's lit2oeb command line function works perfectly. There is indeed something about this file that the other two did not exhibit that prevents a straight forward conversion. I'm uncertain if Penguin has done it intentionally or not, I'll have to be wary of future Penguin purchases in either case. Perhaps the fourth book, due out tomorrow, will be my next test--hopefully Fictionwise gets it.

got it!

Okay I finally got it figured out how to convert the file. It took me a while, I am not used to doing much at the command line level.

Finally I managed it with the following command:

clit IntoShadow.lit Intoshadow-oebps\

I tried it several otherways, but that one was the only way that worked for me. The new directory of Intoshadow-oebps had the files that actually had data in them! Which is a good thing!

Given that you use an EB11500, for direct .LIT to .imp conversions, follow the instructions created by me per the thread Convert .lit directly into .IMP formats .

This will offer you another option to convert .lit ebooks (and offer some automation of the process!). A lot of useful information is contained therein, albeit, nothing about any new incompatabilities with .lit formats that may exist!

Yep that is what I normally use. It has worked just fine until this last book. So hopefully this is not a new DRM thing they invented to cause me a headache!

The best way to handle LIT files these days is to download Calibre even if you do not have a Sony Reader of any kind.

use ConvertLIT to strp the DRm leaving you with a DRM free LIT file. Then use lit2oeb to convert the lit to it's base componanys. It actually works better then ConvertLIT for malformed LIT files.

new DRM protected books

Well I bought a couple of new books this week and was able to convert them without a problem. So apparently it was just an issue with that one title... I hope!
