And my experience was also pretty bad. I went in to buy one a while ago. Saw it there and it was just uneven. I figured I would think about it, drove back to work and that's when Amazon announced the PW.

Now, the PW screen is far from perfect. But I have been back at B&N and I looked at it again. Hands down, the PW screen I have is better than the Glow in that store. Could be a bad unit. Or it could be a unit that took a lot of abuse on display. But the screen, in its current state, is not good.

Well... I think Nook Glo and KPW need a new engineer and new R and D team.. if you ask me.. they are both way behind the times..

I must add..both these companies are almost giving away the eReaders so they will get you to buy their books..they are both made in China for about $2.00 each.. so what can we really expect?

I own a Nook Glow (and have read a ton on it) and you've seen my pictures of my PW.

My Nook Glow isn't even on the same planet.. the PW is so much better in any light it's not even funny.

I haven't decided what I'm doing with my Nook. It is so much worse I don't want to keep it as a 2nd eReader, and I feel like I'd be doing a family member a disservice if I gave it to them, it's that inferior to the PW IMO.

Maybe I need to photograph the Nook in the same conditions I photographed the PW.

It all comes down to the contrast IMO.. with the lights off the PW has much better contrast than the Nook, and as you turn the lights up the Nook contrast gets worse and the PW gets better. There is something about B&Ns lighting that cause it to wash out the black on the eInk, while the PW seemingly has a wavelength of light that doesn't reflect off the black text so it just makes the white whiter.

The Nook is also much bluer (higher color temp) but that is really not annoying in a totally dark room IMO. It just makes the light much more jarring if you try and use it in a dimly lit room.

I still haven't gotten past the point where I can actually read on my PW without going "OMG this screen is amazing". Note I did get one from a "later batch" as I had to wait forever for mine.

Yay! I finally have power and a working cable modem again!

My local B&N doesn't have little tents for the Glowlights, just a display counter with a bunch of Glowlights tethered to the top of it. While the light on my Nook washes the contrast out a little bit, I find that preferable to the colored blobs behind the text on either of my Paperwhites.

According to the USPS tracking site my new Kobo left the Opa Locka, Florida sorting facility on Sunday night. I'm hoping Sandy hasn't delayed the delivery past this weekend; I can't wait to see how the third brand of lighted ereader looks.

Yes, I will take the Nook Glo without blobs vs the KPW with all the colorful globs any day... especially in the bedroom at night.. the PW at night is just Plain and Simple unacceptable.. the Nook Glo is way gooder..LOL, I have had 3 people who saw it at night and agree.. they were not clued in to what my objective was..

Hi.. the bottom line here is.. how and why would Kindle/Amazon manufacture and release something like the KPW which is a totally inferior product.. (POS).. I thought they would have thunk it out and checked it out more before they released that piece of Garbage from China.. I would be happy to pay more for a superior product without globs and spots all over the screen..

The Kobo Glo was delivered yesterday, and the screen is lovely in all lighting conditions. I think the contrast out of the box is somewhere between the Nook and the Kindle, but it allows a bunch of adjustments to line spacing and font rendering so with some fiddling I may get the Caecilia font adjusted to look like my 2nd Paperwhite. The rest of the user interface software on the Kobo needs some work; it's nowhere near as polished as the Nook or Kindle, but I can live with it because the screen is so nice.

With all the lights jacked up to the maximum my Nook is the bluest of the bunch and the Kindle is yellow. My Nook and Kobo both have nice, even lighting, and the gray background blobs on my current PW probably wouldn't be so noticeable if the LED on the far left wasn't so much brighter than the other three. Quality control seems to have been sacrificed to produce a few million Paperwhites in time for Christmas.

I'll try to get pictures this weekend. The Kobo is definitely a keeper, but the Kindle may be going back to Staples after I get through my comparisons.

Depending on what you are looking for in a UI, you might want to keep an eye on the Kobo 2.1.x plugin development in these forums. I think it cleans things up very nicely on my Touch, but it isn't quite the same as a Glo.

Re: user interface, Kobo vs. Kindle.

I really think it depends on what you are used to. Part of the reason I rejected the Kindle was because I didn't like its user interface. I found it clunky and not at all intuitive.

NNolan, you probably know this but check the advanced settings for the fonts as you can darken/embolden some of the included fonts by altering the weight and sharpness.

Those of you who have found them in stores: where are you located? I've checked a few Best Buys and Staples in the Seattle area, and no one has them. Some of the staff have no idea what I'm talking about, and the others can only say they're coming soon but can't specify beyond that. Kind of frustrating, considering how close we are to Amazon HQ here.
