Just got a kindle paperwhite in store at Best Buy

I got my PW at Best Buy last week - tested it in the store. OK.

One of the good things about the PW that is usually not posted is that it is probably the most "portable Kindle" on the market. In terms of weight it is only 7.4 oz and does not require the added weight of a light. Because of the lighted screen it can be read under different levels of environmental light. Battery life is reportedly good.

My screen has slight pink/green splotches but I see them mostly in total darkness, not daylight. This a good Kindle for my purse.

I looked at the nook glo at barnes and noble and it looked terrible.

I did too and I thought the same thing! I stopped in the day after I got my paper white and was literally shocked at the poor uneven lighting and the patchiness on the screen. They had a "box" you could use to cover it up and I wasn't impressed at all. Maybe the store model had been through a lot?

I have seen 2 Glowlights though - one at Books A Million and one at Best Buy and BOTH looked severely uneven and splotchy.

If your brand new PW has visible pink/green splotches, that's not a good sign. Keep a close watch and see if they change or grow bigger or more noticeable over the next few weeks.

I loved my PW at first. I actually told my wife it was "my favorite device ever!". But, over time, the faint splotches, irregular light and washed out fonts bothered me more and more. And I could swear it was getting worse over time.

So I sent it back before the return period ended even though it made me very sad to do so.

I should have been more specific.. at nite in the DARK, the Nook Glo is superior.. very even light and no splotches.. PW TERRIBLE in DARK.. I liked my PW at first, however I have a replacement model coming from Amazon.. I gotta tell ya, I don't think it will be much better from what I'm hearing around the various forums etc.. I think they will have to make some MAJOR changes to get it right.. just my 3 cents..

The nook goo i looked at in B&N was in the dark. It was terrible.

Hmmm, I'm curious about how you got B&N to turn off all the lights for you so you could see a Glowlight in the dark. Anyway, my Glowlight is very evenly lit; neither of my Paperwhites even comes close.

I agree.. my Nook Glo in the dark is awesome.. PW terrible as stated previously..

So our amateur equipment in some cases is actually part of the problem. In some cases not. It's hard to tell which is which, and I don't want to get in the habit of questioning everything I see, but I tend to trust my eyes over amateur photography.

Do your photos actually match what you see? If so, then yes, there's definitely different bars being used on this forum. But if they don't match what you see (mine don't), then we get into the situation where other folks don't fully understand why we are satisfied with our screens.

Mine looks very similar to beninma's in person, which I find acceptable. Not everyone will accept the dark patches at the bottom.

For those on the fence, it might help to articulate what about the two is different and makes you believe the Nook Glowlight is better. I made the comparison myself, and with my SO, and we both agreed that the PW is better. But I didn't think the Glowlight screen was bad either. I have articulated my thoughts on it before, but I think it might help some folks to understand your position better if they knew the why a bit better.

This last page is filled with a bit of "Nook is terrible" and "PW is terrible", but that isn't terribly constructive or helpful to someone trying to decide what to get.

Do your photos actually match what you see? If so, then yes, there's definitely different bars being used on this forum. But if they don't match what you see (mine don't), then we get into the situation where other folks don't fully understand why we are satisfied with our screens.

Well, after sorting through all this.. I was jacked at first by the KPW.. I tried it at nite.. OK.. I had ditched my NOOK GLO to the under the table.. get rid of it stack.. but I fired it up again at nite and compared it to the KPW and the Nook Glo is so much better.. at nite that is.. in the broad daylight the KPW is great with brightness control on high.. so bottom line.. the KPW better in day light.. Nook Glo better in the Dark.. if KPW was on the ball and had no problems, I would be able to use both nite and day.. so I use Nook Glo in the Dark and KPW in the Day.... I wish I could just have one for both situations..

I own a Nook Glowlight and the screen is fine, no patchiness or unevenness.

You can't really go by the store models, they get banged up.

I so much wanted the KPW to be the ticket for Day and Night, but it didn't work out that way.. I have to use KPW day and Nook Glo night.. what a shame.. they both have lots of work to do... I want one ereader with e-ink with a light to work in day and night.. any suggestions????.. LOL.. Kobo may be the answer..
