Well, I'm most concerned with the third-party reader apps. Not only are they designed for tablet size on Android, but they are much much better than any of the reading apps on iOS. This is pretty important to me.

I'm an Apple and iOS user as well as a Windows and Android user.
I would love an iPad but it's outside my budget. However, even though I've resigned myself to not owning an iPad, I've never felt it was overpriced. I've always seen the iPad as a top-notch product at a fair price. I'm a freelancer and a parent so I have to think a lot about my expenditures. I do not want an iPad Mini. In fact, it's the first i-Gadget that I have not wanted from the moment I first saw it. It doesn't have the wow factor, and the price seems out of sync with the value. It needs either a higher price and better specs, or a lower price with the current specs. |

Well, actually that's not true. I DO want an iPad Mini, just not the one they're currently selling. |

I think people expected better specs at that price, and rightfully so. But this does seem to follow Apple's way of doing things. They will sell a lot I'm sure, then when they bump next year's model to specs this one should have had, they'll sell a lot more and make more profit than they otherwise would have. It truly is amazing how well their business model works for them. I don't think any other company could get away with that. |

So I download TuneIn. Are you kidding? This is exactly the type of "phone app" I've been talking about. The iPad app looks much nicer. Both work, mind you. Try downloading Evernote -- THAT'S an app designed for a tablet. I went to Google Play - they have a Staff recommendations for tablet apps section. Not a single app I'm interested in was on the list. Mostly games. I went to the "must have table apps" section. Really poor selection. As I _have_ an Android tablet, I look forward to this situation being rectified. As well as Google making the Play Store itself a better tablet experience |

![]() Yes. I've got Evernote, just not on my home screen. Bear in mind with the others, it's never been the elegance I was challenging. Just your assertion that we had to make do with mostly phone apps, rather than tablet ones, on Android. Graham |

I'll never count out Amazon, they do tend to stay ahead of the competition. There have been a number of supposed "iPod killers", but the iPod stayed ahead. Apple didn't invent the tablet, but they made the first one that had much impact on the market. This time, they are entering a more established market with the iPad mini. It remains to be seen how well they will do with this device.

My screens are very uncluttered, and I continually try to reduce what is there. I have noticed how some people talk about collecting every "free" app that comes along. Most of the apps I have are those where one day, I said to myself, "there must be a better way." Let me see what is available. |

![]() But the ones I collect are Amazon's FAOTD. Only a few (~5 or so) are on my SGP4 at any one given time. The rest reside in the cloud. If I get bored with any of them, I trade them in for new ones. |

okay, I broke down and ordered. Which is a complete 180 from where I was during the event. I guess I can officially be called an apple fangirl. I won't keep it if I don't like it, and I really might not--retina was supposed to be a dealbreaker for me. i actually spent most of the past few days thinking I would order an iPad 4, but I changed my mind during the past hour. Because I had an iPad 3 and ended up returning it--I had problems with bad tint and in the end decided that it was large and heavy enough that often when I wanted to browse the internet I'd grab my phone instead for quick stuff, even though the screen is way too small (iPhone 4.. still using and won't update for a while still). I was really hoping to hold out until the next iPad, which I figured would be thinner, lighter.. well now with the refresh to the innards, I have no idea when that refresh is going to be so I was going to grab the iPad anyways and just sell/upgrade next year. (iPad seems to hold value pretty well..) but when I thought about it, I decided that iPad 4 will, like the 3, of course, be too heavy for my needs (browsing/reading in bed.. although the size would have been much better for work PDFs) and the iPad mini.. well, yes, it's expensive and the performance specs are not that impressive. but it's around 10oz for a 7.9 in screen, and you *do* get quite a bit more screen real estate at that size along with the aspect ratio. That makes it lighter and bigger than anything in the same class. and I like iOS apps.
I feel kinda like a failure to report this on mobileread haha but I'm not married to the device and not at all adverse to returning if the screen quality is too big of a disappointment. I fully expect to be happy with the size and weight. We'll see, I guess. what I really want is the iPad 5, which I hope will be 20% lighter than the current iPad.. but that doesn't exist yet. I probably should have considered android more, but my entire workplace uses iPad, Scrivener for iOS is supposedly coming soon, and that alone would tie me to iOS forever* (or at least until an Android vers. comes out, but that's not til later..) the Nook HD+ was very interesting to me (but I hate the way B&N handles side-loading) and I was also curious about the rumored Nexus 10, but honestly, I just look at the weight of the iPad mini and nothing really compares for the screen size you get. *I almost want a Mac just to use Scrivener 2.0. and I have always hated OsX since my college made us use it. That's how much I love Scrivener. Last edited by seajewel; 10-26-2012 at 03:28 AM. |

Don't be!
![]() We may bat these things back and forwards but if MR has a vocal majority view on something it's only a vocal majority view here, and only because we're digging deep into stuff that may not matter to any one particular user. All the high end devices are pretty good (spectacular by the standards of a few years ago) and we only nit pick because it's a fun (if somewhat wasteful) way to wind down. Let us know how you get on with it. Graham |
