Leave your Kobo plugged into charger running with wifi on and sync button displayed. Whenever you pass by press sync button. Don't need to hover over your reader. When you pass and it is asking to down load update or install update say yes. Otherwise press sync button again. This should not take longer than a week, or month. But will seem longer.

I agree, current firmware seems to finally be stable. Although it's a pity the book title is no longer displayed. It's less of a problem now the covers are working again, but sometimes I get to the end of a book and can't remember what series I'm reading, or the book doesn't have a cover...

So they are! That is a shame, but despite that I'm very happy with the performance of 2.1.5.

One observation (not criticism) is the page numbers displayed on the right hand edge are slightly larger font. No biggy, and I know its an option you can turn off.

Thank you Kobo.

From 2.1.4, the covers for books on the SD card are no longer stored anywhere. They are generated on the fly.

Book details are still stored in the onboard database but they are no longer removed when the SD card is removed. They get removed when the SD card is put back in and the books aren't on it. So, if you put remove that card with 10000 books on it, add one book and put it back in, the processing will be a lot quicker.

Page turns are only faster compared to 2.0.0. They are no faster than what I had under 1.9.14 - but to get it to that speed I had to knock the font sharpness and weight down to about 3/4ths of the default (the settings had gotten reset, for some reason, in the upgrade from 2.0.0).

Yes, it's overall a bit better than 2.0.0, but that's not saying much...
I just upgraded yesterday from 1.9.17 and I can attest to not just the random rebooting but not having the right cover appear on sleep and off modes from the book I was just reading. Then the 'wrong' cover appears on the home page reading list and when selected it opens yet another book.. For me this was the worst update possible.. I even had to factory reset after the upgrade downloaded due to it getting stuck (waiting 90 minutes should have been enough I think to upgrade w/o SD card in slot).

I am going to try fooling around with deleting 'extraneous' files first and see if that helps. then factory reset again as last resort. Getting all the ebooks from kobo downloaded and installed took 5 hrs last time.

Ah, you are correct. I relied on the firmware update notes. Thanks robko!

What extraneous files are you going to delete? Unless you have non-book files on the device, there isn't really anything to delete. If you hadn't needed to do the factory reset, there would be cover images for your sideloaded books left over from the 1.9.17 install, but they won't be there now.

If you do a factory reset, then I suggest you:

- Start the desktop application and let it do its sync from Kobo to your desktop
- Do the factory reset
- Connect the device and let firmware download and copy to the device.
- When that finishes and it starts copying the books over, let a couple go over and press the "skip" button (from memory it's "skip").
- Eject the device, let it do its install and do some testing.
- If everything seems OK, connect again and get the desktop app to sync the books.

The above should separate the relatively short upgrade from the much longer setup of the books. And if it doesn't seem to be working, you can always go back to 1.9.17.

Yeah, I noticed that you get the title as text for a split second and then the image. Very annoying.

Wouldn't it take the same amount of time to process the 10,001 books on the SD card as it did to process them the first time (10,000 books)? That is, if the books are removed from the database when the SD card is pulled, and I believe they are.

Basically looking for any "N3_FULL" files first. They were the largest extraneous file 'type' that took up precious memory on the device and filled up the .images folder. Didn't help so I tried erasing the sqlite file (nothing to lose at this point). Big mistake.. Didn't get past the happy 'face' with blocks cycle. Before reading this post, did a factory reset and just installing the firmware part with the desktop and simply cancelled the process when it got to step 4 (syncing with kobo.com for the kepubs). Restarted the device. Seemed to work. Inserted my sdcard and waited the 4-5 hours for it to process all 2191 books. Finished a few hours ago and all sideloaded epubs I tested with earlier work now with covers and all. None of the previous problems have cropped up so I think I'm all stable now.. Just took over 20 hours total to get it right. :P Hopefully it remains stable after I sync back all 1072 kepubs from kobo.com Monday. Shelves work but I wish they allowed you to order the books up and down as you wished. I'll just have to work on renaming the books to get them in the right order for now.

It is either that or store the images so they waste space. The complaints will be about the same either way.

No, with 2.1.4 and later they are definitely not removed. I've done a LOT of experimenting and examination of the database and have a very good understanding of what is happening in it.

In any case it is very easy to test. Put 10 books on an SD card and insert it. After a few moments the screen will flash and the processing screen will come up. This will count the percentage processed and then display the home screen. Wait until the screen is finished and eject the card. The home screen will update to show books on the main menu. Then put the card back in. The home screen will flash and update to put the books from the SD card on it again. But, the processing screen won't display.

If you really want to confirm it, take the card out, connect to a computer and have a look at the database. Search the "content" table for contentId like "%/sd/%". There will be rows for each book you have on the SD card.

or we could be given a choice....
I'm quite happy to waste space rather than have about 80% of my books be unidentifiable by the cover.

Ugh. Started a new book, and it's not displaying the cover when I put it to sleep, just the book title instead. Yet the library shows the cover!

The Kobo doesn't use the cover image when sleeping or off. It uses the first page of the file. So the first page of your epub is probably the title.

Uhhh, I don't think that's right. I have several books with no integrated cover that have never given me any problem. The book I was reading when I did the upgrade I'd changed the cover and it was still showing the new cover after upgrade (which isn't integrated into the epub).
Besides, this book where it's showing the title only, that isn't the first page... There's actually a rather ugly image on the first page.
