Agree completely. Just want to know how they can measure these things.

I think that now it's done by satellite and very accurate time measures (i.e. by GPS).

But in the old days it was done by making triangles and measuring their angles, starting from one known baseline.

Some argue that because of problems determining the height from which to measure when using satellite data, the old method is actually more accurate for "height above sea level" measurements.

You work from the coast, using triangles and spirit levels.

The Himalayan Range is a baby mountain group, which accounts for it's height. In fact, it's still growing. The Appalachians have been higher than Everest three times in Geologic history, but worn down from wind and weather erosion. If you look at the Alps, starting in France and going south, you can see the difference in shape as you get younger and younger mountains. The Dolomites are VERY sharp compared with the French Alps, which have worn down considerably already in comparison. I wonder about the age of the Andes...

So they are born, peak in their late twenties and then it is downhill from there, untill finally at old age they start to wither and shrink. Kind of reminds me of someone.

You left out the Ayurvedic part... They get reincarnated and grow tall again and again. As I said, the Appalachian Chain is in it's third decline. It's the Eurasian Plate and the African Plate squeezing the North American Plate against the Pacific Plate, causing both the Appalachian Chain and the Rockies to crumple and rise. (The Rockies are much younger than the Appalachians but formed from the same pressures.) If you put a sheet of paper on a table and push from opposite sides, you can the same event. (But smaller...)

How much farther does your head travel than your feet?

Edit: explanation:
Feet travel 2*pi*r (r=earth radius)
Head travel 2*pi*(r+6ft)
Difference is 2*pi*6ft

I think we had this question just a while ago. I think it was the Grand Mouse that came up with the solution in this post

Another great question, but I have no idea of the answer.

I just like the part about "Suppose you are 6 feet tall"; I've always wanted to be tall. Just think, I wouldn't have to use a step ladder to reach the kitchen cabinets.

This afternoon I noticed one of the girls in our department going to another department to fax some stuff. We have a fax machine in our office, so I asked her why she was going all the way out to this department to fax stuff. It turns out that the fax machine in our office is too high for her to reach. --- We moved the fax machine for her.
