Possible reason for color blotches
Its possible that the Paperwhite INTENTIONALLY had a color eInk screen inserted with a future firmware upgrade required to properly use it.
In that case the first firmware upgrade may correct all the random color blotches and a firmware upgrade after that may enable the PW to correctly show color pictures in books and magazines. If that is the case, then all the returns may have been in vain especially if the color blotches don't really interfere with reading. The problems we are seeing may simply be the situation in any first generation eReader with a totally new configuration. |

POSSIBLE !!
If you look at the title of this thread, I used the word, "POSSIBLE." I am speculating.
See this link where folks are speculating that a firmware upgrade MAY correct the problems: https://www.mobileread.com/forums/sho...=193583&page=7 |

I think you are grasping at straws from an empty box of straws.
Besides, firmware cannot fix a hardware problem. My guess is that the color blotches are due to reflections from the capacitive touch layer and that is not something firmware can fix (if I am correct). |

The light layer seems to be absorbing certain wavelengths sometimes, it is on my device a green tint is more pronounced at lower lightlevels, see here.
It doesn't happen because there is too much green light (aka reflections), but because there is too little red and blue light in some areas. My best guess is that the light distribution layers structure is not always uniform. |

No it is not possible. Amazon is not using color eink, which is just regular screen with color filter array added. They are not adding expense, complexity, and weight to a product and not use the feature.
Unless you think they are going to release a firmware and turn on colors and yell surprise! We gave you a color display. Yay! It's most probably a flaw with the light diffuser. Their lighting system must have a low fault tolerance which is why we're seeing many problem units. |
