The treatment of phobias quite frequently involves a rather sadistic technique known as flooding. In the case of fear of flying, the patients are put in a simulator, then a real airplane and spend as much time as needed to allow the anxiety response to be extinguished. It is painful, but extremely effective. Lots of informed consent documents need to be signed beforehand...

Phobias have one thing in common with religions - you ridicule them at your own risk. I won't go into details on the story of two brothers (one with a phobia of snakes & one who liked snakes). I'll just say that after all the results were in, the one who liked snakes did have a girlish shriek. (True story)

Wow. I thought that was only in bad sitcoms and cartoons.

So.......if I have a fear of worms, you would put me in a vat of earthworms? If I survived that, and I doubt I would, at least in a sane version, I would have to literally kill you. I already feel the panic/hysteria/anger kicking in........

I'd rather live with the fear.

Seriously, it involves a bit more finesse than just tossing you in a room covered in worms. But eventually, there would be worms.

There are also gradual desensitisation programmes available for those who can't bear the thought of flooding (total immersion).

Ok...this is interesting. I am afraid of dogs....big mean dogs. I don't mind smaller ones too much. Would you throw me in a room of big mean dogs? And what if they really bit me....they can smell fear ya know. I guess that's where all the advance signatures come in....

Well, we'd start out with a pack of chihuahua's and work our way up to a room full of Rottweilers.

No, the progression would be to start out talking about large dogs, then to look at pictures of large dogs while talking aobut them, then to have a large dog (therapy trained dog, btw) in the room, leading up to petting the dog eventually. Depending on how you do, it would takd from two to ten sessions to get to that stage.
