In general, are you happy with your kobo?

Is it worth the "risk" of buying one?

Since after purchasing we have 28 days to return it I'll probably buy it anyway to test it out, but it would be good to know how in the longterm it may pan out (ie. waiting for "improved" firmware/needing to contact support).

Thanks.
I loved my initial Kobo [1st gen], took a chance on Kobo Touch, and it was a nightmare. Too many things you had to worry about, was it the right cord, it didn't like SD cards, it didn't like it if you had too many books, it didn't like too many changes at once, the list felt endless. Anyways after much frustration I passed that on to my Mom as I only update her libary a couple of times a year. As a basic reader with NO additional functionality, it serves it's purpose.

A few months ago I moved on to Sony PRST1, and I LOVE it! It's never given me any grief, and I find it's much faster [page turns, loading, etc.] than the Kobo Touch. I love how easy it was to modify collections/series data on it, and I frequently update my library. Again, it's NEVER given me any grief.

You asked for opinions, I personally would wait until reviews and comparisons are out. Let any firmware issues get sorted, etc, and buy a couple of months after that. In general that is my technology buying guide anyways. But for Kobo, especially for me with my experience, I would wait awhile.

Good luck whatever you decide and welcome to MBR.

I'd have to say that between the Kindle and the Kobo, I've had fewer problems with firmware updates on the Kobo. One update for my Kindle Touch (birthday gift from my brother in Seattle) broke my home wireless connection. I ended up passing the Kindle on to my son who was happy enough using Calibre to sync his books over USB until the next update "unbroke" the wireless. I think he updated to 5.1.0 followed rather rapidly by 5.1.1 and 5.1.2. He's still disappointed that text to speech only supports English as part of the 5.1.x update was to add more languages. From mid-December to August, I seem to remember the Kindle Touch which came with firmware 5.0.0, was updated to 5.0.1, 5.0.3, 5.0.4, 5.1.0, 5.1.1 and 5.1.2. A couple of the updates were relatively minor updates going by the file size being in the 1.5-3MB range (5.1.2 for example, which fixed a security hole in the web browser).

You might also want to check the various posts on Mobileread forums about Kindles being bricked during firmware updates -- sounds rather familiar doesn't it?

I don't have any numbers as to the percentages of failures for the Kobo Touch and the Kindle Touch so any comments I make on issues simply reflect what I saw with the three touch interface ereaders here (1 Kindle Touch, 2 Kobo Touch). My personal preference is still for the Kobo based on availability of tools for manipulating .epub format files.

Hold the press. The Collins Kobo online store has the Glo at $127.50 and the Touch at $102.84.

This makes the Glo actually cheaper in Australia that in Canada, by 13 Aussie cents (at today's exchange rate).

This also means I'll buy a Glo when they come out.

I think I might buy myself an early birthday present

I just looked, the WiFi is $69.69. Wow. But, I think someone was having fun with that price

And the mini is $84.60. I see a lot of Kobo's under Christmas trees this year.

I noticed last week they have the Vox for around $175, but the following day back up to $225. I reckon it is a mistake.....though I could be wrong.

We'll see.

The Vox is now $193 .51. The $175 might have been a mistake or a one day special. The prices of all the Kobo's are significantly lower today. And I like the price points they have. It will be interesting to see how JB HiFi and OfficeWorks match these.

I checked with Officeworks and they told me they won't have the Glo until late October and I think they said it would be AU$159. I bought my Kobo Touch from them about two weeks ago (love it) and it was $114, but a couple of days ago it had gone up to $124. So Collins seem to have the cheaper approach. - for now anyway.

Where are you seeing this, Murg? I'm looking here:

http://www.collinsbooks.com.au/kobo-glo/p/koboglo

and it says $159.99 for the Glo.

Oh, goddammit. All the Kobo were reduced last night, and I was super tempted to order the Glo, but they've put it back up since then.

My self-restraint has betrayed me.

Why would they drop prices (of a new device!) for just one day? What weirdness!

Aaah that's about the same as Europe's 129 euros. No need to be jealous after all.

Same page. It was at the lower price for a day.

Strongly suggests what the street discounted price will be (can you say JBHiFi?)
