I tried as your guide, the result is: 1) delete nobrowser, reboot process about 5minutes, but nothing change for my question, it seems no help for it. 2) I found local.conf file is with content less than L206, without L394 and more. But in another file local.conf.template is with L394-444. How should I do? Replace local.conf with local.conf.template is right? ![]() |

@donnie888: I'm assuming you're running FW 3.4, right? And that you checked local.conf *after* the reboot? And that you're not using a custom prettyversion.txt with a weird syntax?

I have the 0.7 jailbreak and the SS 0.29.
Tried to update from 3.3 to 3.4, but get an U008 error message. What do I do wrong? I also tried to update to the newer 0.11 jailbreak, but it gives me an error message. How can I check which jailbreak version I have? How can I update? Thanks and regards, f-j-p |

My Kindle Keyboard (running on Kindle 3.4) is unable to connect to Wi-Fi after I installed JailBreak v0.11.N, Fonts v5.4.N. Everything works normal but that thing. What should I do? Uninstall jailbreak, and try again?

@f-j-p: The first error is a corrupt file. Re-download the update & re-upload it again, and take care to unplug your Kindle safely.
As for the jailbreak, I can't tell you any more without more details about the error you encountered. (But the current version should be listed in linkjail/info.txt, and the upgrade instructions are one of the first things in the first post of this thread). @Mickra89: Unrelated. Neither of those hack do anything even remotely affecting that part of the system. (I'll add that, depending on the current load on your device, there might be a somewhat noticeable delay before the WiFi comes up. If you have a large library/archive/collections, let your Kindle sit still for a while. Also check that your kindle is not sitting looping trying to index a broken file). You might also try again after a full reboot of your device, who knows ;D. Last edited by NiLuJe; 09-17-2012 at 07:15 PM. |

I've noticed KF8s (with nobrowser mode turned off) are very picky, not only about families being the same name, but about style names. For instance, I'm using a font where the bold and italic faces are called "Bold/Italic Old Style Figures", and that's different enough that bolding and italics seem to not work. Is there any way to loosen this up a little on your end, or will we need to edit the TTFs?
(If the specific font will help for troubleshooting, I can PM it, but it's copyrighted, so I don't want to post a publicly available link) Last edited by MorningSong; 09-18-2012 at 10:06 AM. |

I would suggest a good old fashioned hold down the power button for 20 secs and see what the full reboot brings like Niluje said. Good luck! |

Installed Jailbreak and the screensaver hack and both work perfectly. Still holding back on fonts for the moment and hoping (perhaps vainly) for more exploration of issues with KF8. |

@MorningSong: Yes, I'm aware of that (it's hinted at in the doc, actually).
It's not particularly pretty/easy to tweak automatically without adding a bit more overhead, and, depending on the metadata of the font, it might just not be possible at all. Hence my conservative stance to do nothing particular, and rely on correct metadata ![]() You might be able to tweak things a bit, without having to tweak the fonts themselves (but in case you do, I usually use FontForge, and it did the trick quite well): Look at linkfonts/etc/local.conf (& the template file). Look at what's done with Caecilia, where each style has a different family name: they glue all of these together under one single family name, while fixing the styling for each. You can try to do the same with your 'broken' fonts, and see if it helps ![]() ![]() @Prestidigitweeze: There's no real issues left with KF8, it just takes a good 5 minutes to boot the first time, and, like MorningSong is experiencing, might be a bit more picky about the fonts metadata. (I'm speaking of KF8+Fonts hack, I'm leaving out the usual quirkiness of the KF8 renderer on the K3 ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 09-18-2012 at 12:39 PM. |

Bricked K4 with USBNetwork Hack
After having succesfully used my jailbroken Kindle4 (NT) with the Screensaver Hack for some time, I wanted to activate SSH over WiFi today so that I do not need to enter diag mode for SSH access anymore.
For that I downloaded and installed the new K4 jailbreak https://www.mobileread.com/forums/att...chmentid=92466. This worked well. After that I downloaded the file kindle-usbnetwork-0.40.N.zip linked on the first page of this post. From inside this ZIP file I extracted update_usbnetwork_0.40.N_k4_install.bin to the Kindle and did an update (Menu -> Settings -> Menu -> Update). The install went fine (D:\usbnet\usbnetwork_install.log said "Success"). I next renamed D:\usbnet\DISABLE_auto to D:\usbnet\auto und rebooted. Now I am stuck at the Screen "USB Drive Mode" but cannot connect to the kindle via SSH (ssh on 192.168.2.2 with putty gets me a "Network error: connection timed out"). Can anyone PLEASE help me? What shall I do??? PS: What I do not understand is, that in the device manager (Win7) my Kindle shows up as "Remote NDIS based Internet Sharing Device" as soon as I connect the USB cable (as it did when I entered the Diag Mode and activated USBNetwork before I installed the USBNetwork hack). However I cannot connect to 192.168.2.2! I did not touch the D:\usbnet\etc\config file! The default IP is 192.168.2.2, right? |

@DRNKMNKY: Basically, read the doc (README_FIRST in the package) for more details, but:
* By default, SSH over WiFi is disabled. That means via USB only. That means you have to setup the network interface properly, and, yes, the default IP should be 192.168.2.2 over USB. The IP over WiFi will depend entirely on your local network settings. (the 711 page might help on this front, though, as would your router's UI). * Never switch to auto mode without checking that your setup is sane, never. It's not the default for a very good reason. Especially if you're confused like you are. * Never switch to wifi mode without checking that your setup is sane. Also the reason it's not enabled by default. * Never boot your Kindle in SSH auto mode while it's plugged to a computer. That's probably the reason you're sitting in front of the 'USB Drive Mode' screen with a Kindle in usbnet mode, and not usbms. TL;DR: You're doing it wrong, RTFM ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 09-18-2012 at 03:10 PM. |

@NiLuJe! Thank you very much for your fast reply!!!
I did RTFM, but I think I did not understand the instructions correctly: if not by renaming DISABLE_auto to auto how do I start the ssh daemon? Would this be done by doing the following (as per manual): ;debugOn ~usbNetwork ;debugOff Because if that is the case, then I can see now where I went wrong! I do not understand what I have to do on my Kindle4 to "... be in debug mode to run private commands, so, on the Home screen, bring up the search box by hitting [DEL] ..."??? @DRNKMNKY: Yep, that's the preferred way of testing things in the first place
![]() The instructions are broad enough to encompass a wide range of devices, so, yeah, you might be confused by the fact that there's no keys on your device, but there's still a way to pop the search bar up on the Home screen and an on screen keyboard to type stuff in it ![]() Last edited by NiLuJe; 09-18-2012 at 04:28 PM. |
