Kobo, will it ever get email -> reader

This to me is one of the nice advantages of Kindle.
I can send snippets in email, use Calibre to send emailed newspapers etc to the Kindle in the early hours.

Will the Kobo ever get an email -> reader service? Has this ever been touch on?

honestly, i hope not! i got the Kobo as a reader. that was all i wanted. if i wanted email, movies, tunes, making my morning cuppa, i would have chosen something different.

it's sort of a focused, simple reader. there's an elegance to that.

just my .02 ...

That's not what the OP was asking though. They're asking about emailing books and articles to your Kobo account so they can be automatically added to the device, like you can do with Kindle's and Kindle apps.

You can't email but you could use the Calibre server + web browser to "pull" your material from Calibre.

How to here: (although described for Sony T1, should work same way in Kobo's browser...)

Wouldn't that be the same as a wireless sync or am I missing something? I've never used a kindle so I have no idea how emailing to it works.

It would be the same as a wireless sync if the wireless sync would also sync all your sideloaded books.

So basically what the request is is asking for Kobo to accommodate sideloaded books within the user accounts, plus an extra email address that sends 'stuff' straight to the user account.

I vote yes please. It's the one Kindle thing I'm jealous of.

Didn't Amazon do this for Kindle because it was only way to get books onto Kindle that was not bought at Amazon? I believe those books also had DRM so they could not be used on another reader. Kindles were totally locked down except for this small concession.

No, you can easily sideload any mobi file to a Kindle via USB or using the web browser. This just give folks another method.

Forgive my ignorance, but am I understanding correctly that Kindle has a web browser, and that you can use that web browser to navigate, say, to the Dropbox web site and download files directly from Dropbox to the Kindle? Can you also email files to yourself, then navigate to your email's web site (gmail.com, yahoo.com, etc.) then download the attached files directly to your Kindle? If so, cool!

Yes, or you can just send the file directly to your Kindle's email address and it will automatically download to your device instead (and save itself to your Kindle library at Amazon for later re-download) of sending it to someplace like Gmail. I generally download new books to my Kindle from my DropBox account.

You can do the dropbox part on the Kobo Touch, as well. You can also download from Calibre server, if you have that running.

Kobo is subject to Canadian laws. I've been told that there are some privacy hurdles Kobo would have in terms of keeping information about your books from other places either passing through or being stored on their servers.

To put this in context, the US government can get information from US libraries regarding the books a library member has borrowed in the past. My library follows what appears to be the universal practice in Canada of only having a record of what books or other library material you currently have checked out. It's a privacy thing.

Can Kobo readers still connect to Dropbox to download files?

I ask because it seems the Kindle's experimental browser recently developed difficulties connecting to Dropbox. Wondering if the same problem is affecting Kobo's web browser.

Thanks!

Yes I can still download files from dropbox on my Glo (firmware 3.11.0). There was an issue with the download button you get when sharing a private link, I don't know if that is still working or not, but I can download by logging into my dropbox account and tapping on the file I want to download, and I can download from public links to other people's dropbox files.
