I would never have known about the Aberdeen except I have watched the Jeeves & Wooster DVD's (Fry & Laurie) so many times I have internalized the dialogue. In one episode in which Aunt Agatha's terrier is lost/recovered/lost - Jeeves purchases an imposter and says "To the eyes of love, one Aberdeen terrier is much like another." -- or something quite close!

Correct. All bar Trollope have been proposed as suspects for being Jack the Ripper. pdurrant correctly spotted the fact that Charles Dodgson was the real name of Lewis Carroll.

Golly, I never knew that Lewis Carroll was a candidate for being Jack the Ripper - I was just guessing about the others being mathematicians because I knew he was one.

I didn't know this either, but he was a pretty strange guy at the least and likely a pedophile.

You would be amazed how many people have been suggested as candidates for Jack the Ripper - the difficult part of setting that question was finding somebody from that era who hasn't been suggested!

I recommend the site, Casebook, for anybody interested in the many theories surrounding Jack the Ripper - largely well written without the tendancy to uncritically buy into too many of the lunatic theories around it (it pretty roundly dismisses Lewis Carroll as a suspect, for example).
