Shame on you. English is only my 3rd language. last: adjective a superl. of late with later as compar. 1. occurring or coming after all others, as in time, order, or place: the last line on a page. 2. most recent; next before the present; latest: last week; last Friday. 3. being the only one remaining: my last dollar; the last outpost; a last chance. 4. final: in his last hours. 5. ultimate or conclusive; definitive: the last word in the argument. |

I'll have to side with Jon on this one. There's no way that "last adventure" could mean anything other than "final adventure." If you said "latest adventure," that would be fine.

It depends on context, surely? If I were to be asked a question about the books and answered, "Oh, that happened in the last book", that could quite reasonably be read as the 'latest' one. I agree, though, that 'latest' would have been a much better choice of word in the OP. |

definition #2 is not wrong. But the meaning of last is based on the context used. The way last was used, it meant final as in the last book of the series. I was asking for clarification as I've not read anything about this being the last book of the series.

I have read the book. There is nothing in it to explicitly suggest it is the final book in the Reacher series.

If the life of the series is dependent on Mr. Cruise's short version (herrumph..) of the character, a grammatical reappraisal may be necessary ....... |
