Phew! So glad I've redeemed myself. I did know that contract bridge was a 1920s-era improvement on auction bridge.

Here's another quickie. Most suited to the Yanks, but the Brits have gone to Bedfordshire by now, haven't they?

Lobster Newberg is an extremely delicious dish made of lobster, cognac, sherry, cream, butter, eggs and cayenne pepper. Very healthy, too. In what famous New York restaurant was it created and after whom was it named?

Nary a clue... although I did hear the full story back in the days of 'bulletin board' newsgroups, and I was a member of a cooking group. Someone told us about it, which is why I remembered the part about the controversy. But I have absotivly no memory of the naming. There is a Newberg, N.Y. Does that come into the equation?

I've looked up the answer in Wikipedia, and not only would I not have got it in a month of Sundays, I don't even understand the explanation

A Captain Wenberg suggested the dish to the chef at Delmonico's, who tweaked and put it on the menu as Lobster a la Wenberg and it was deservedly popular. Wenberg and Delmonico had a subsequent falling out, however, and the dish was pulled from the menu. When patrons objected, it was brought back, but as an anagram: Lobster a la Newberg.

I was only going for anagram; the rest is details.

Stitchy gets it for knowing Delmonico's.

I think I'm seriously losing the plot. I read "anagram" as "mnemonic", and couldn't work out how it was a mnemonic.
