Publishers seem to think older books are still worth money based on the prices they are asking. There are really only two possibilities:

1. Old books are not worth anything. If so the high prices asked by some publishers for those old backlist books are unjustified and the buyers are paying high prices for things of very little value.

2. Old books are still of value. If so then if you unable to pass these valuable items to your heirs there is a real financial loss. It doesn't matter if your heir himself is particularly interested in the item. If you leave a valuable antique to someone who prefers modern it doesn't lose any of it's monetary worth just because it's recipient has different tastes.

I don't think you can support both views without being seriously confused.

Printers aren't washing machines, and there are reasons why they should not be pushed too far. Unfortunately, I don't have the time or inclination to watch a nearly hour long piece to find out how credible the claims are. Any kind of brief (and non-video) summary anywhere?

My HP LaserJet 4000 is maybe 15 years old now, possibly a bit older. This last computer upgrade, we had to do some jury-rigging (serial to parallel? parallel to serial? not sure, but there's a converter box in the back of it where the wires are plugged in), and have to play some games to get the kids' newer computers to print to it, but other than that it's still going strong. I can't imagine a printer that dies after only 1500 pages. I suspect that what will force us to get a new printer one of these days will be the inability to connect to it any more, not anything intrinsic to the printer itself.

Apart from historically based research about the lighbulbs, artificially added weakening to nylons and how planned obsolescence in general is now part of design teaching, the documentary follows the spanish guy with the printer on his research:
When the counter was full you got an error message saying the printer needed tech maintenance and refused printing.
When contacted Epson service they said "get a new printer" By digging deeper the guy found said counter chip on one of the printers PCBs and a piece of software by a russian hacker resetting it.
Et Voilà; the ah-so-broken printer automagically worked again...
Further there were shown smarter design flaws for printers: make the jets the way they need frequent cleaning and the wasted ink not easily cleanable from the printers inner parts.

Any of that verified by anyone else, of is that video the only source? Cuz that sure sounds like the sort of thing that, say, Canon, or Brother, or any other printer manufacturer would make big news out of, if it were true. I do see some references to various counters - certainly there's one for replacing ink cartridges, and there's apparently one for the pad that soaks up excess ink. These are not "replace the printer" counters, though, they're "you need to do some maintenance on the printer" counters. Unfortunately, on inkjet printers, parts are usually more than a new printer. This "spanish guy" got the short version from Epson's tech support, sounds like. Instead of "buy a new printer," he probably should have been told "the parts you need are several times as much as a new printer, and there's other parts that will need to be replaced soon anyway."

Inkjet printers really are disposable. That's what you get when you want a printer for $30, instead of $300 or more.

You asked a summary, I gave you one. Yes the error says maintenance but the request for such at Epson lead to the "get a new one" answer although nothing at all was broken, dirty, etc.
It wasn't the ink cartridge sensor, that's a different can of worms. I was really a page counter.

I'd ask where you get those, except I stopped using filament bulbs years ago. When I did though, they generally lasted between a month and two-three months depending on brand and price. I've certainly never had one last even remotely close to a year if in daily use.
Oh, they exist(ed). I have a bunch. But.....

The light output is rather yellow.
The intensity to wattage is low.
They were special purpose items and cost 20 times a standard incandescent bulb.

But if it meant not having to climb a tall ladder every few months to swap light bulbs, I found it worth it. I have since swapped them out for Compact Fluorescent light bulbs. (And I am trialling an LED bulb for lifespan right now. With luck, it'll last 20 years...)

I find the claim that after 1500 pages nothing on an inkjet printer is dirty to be a little thin. Certainly not the case on any inkjet printer I've used (including some commercial equipment - by Epson, interestingly - made for retail store use).

Inkjet printers are very high maintenance, and the stuff made for home use is very low quality.

Estimated service intervals are just that - estimates. How long did it work for? Was it, in fact, printing to the same quality? And so on.

And, again, it's not "a counter/timer that makes the printer stop working permanently," as was claimed. It was a maintenance interval timer, which is common in lots of equipment. Poor customer service, sure, but still entirely routine and not exactly a secret.
