That is most likely true, however its also incredibly sad.

As consumers we owe it to ourselves to know what we are dealing with. I was very lucky........when I bought the first Kindle the original K1, I stumbled on this site right away........and have never looked back. (Thanks to all who helped and were so patient!!)

We must stop taking manufacturers words that "you can't do this, or that" with our toys.......we must do more research, and educate those who feel they are bound by silly rules.

Research and education equals freedom, people! (raises right fist!)

As for those who feel their kids wouldn't want their stuff, that may be true....but its not just about the kids, is it?

Who among us doesn't have friends who would love a copy of a book we have?

As for the kids, if they are educated as well, they won't have to worry about being bound by drm..........I"m just sayin'............

.... and this is true with EVERYTHING in life. Taking out a credit card. Buying a house. Signing any kind of contract. People get themselves into trouble when they don't take the time to do basic fact-finding.

A fair bunch of my pbooks were given to me from possession of family members. (some of them PD material, some not, some PD in original only... ) so I don't really see why stuff we read or listen to should be of no interest to those after us.
(I in fact don't listen to all that contemporary charts crap at all)

And if they do, then make sure to strip the drm from them like I do & the problem is solved.

Trust me, with such limited space as most apartments & houses have these days you don't want or need to accumulate more (old) stuff from others.

I think most people who see my condo probably think that I live a very spartan life, but I have learned the hard way after cleaning out my mothers & older brothers apts. that I don't want my last remaining brother to give himself a heart attack lugging a bunch of old dusty romance novels down to the dumpster.

I dumped the majority of them myself when I moved here in 2008. Anything that was in my storage locker at my old building went straight into the garbage. I didn't see the sense of lugging it from one storage locker to another.

If I ever have to move again or if someone has to clean out my condo, they won't have a lot of work to do!
Cfrizz, that's one of the great joys of the digital world. it's so light and compact. If my niece wants to keep my e-books or music, she can keep it. if she wants just to hang on to it, and think about it later, the whole shebang will fit into a large shoebox...

I am slowly paring down my possessions. I might miss the p-books and CD's and vinyl, but 700 hours of music and 1000+ books on 5 chips, weighing 1/2 an ounce (15 grams), is liberating....

Meh.

I remember when it was miraculous if an affordable car lasted 90,000 miles. Recorded music didn't last too well either. Tires? Young folks don't wanna know.

On the other hand, an investigation in the UK (can't remember whodunnit) found "timer chips" in washing machines and such, designed to make the appliance break down after five years or so. And light bulbs in East Germany regularly lasted for several decades....

So while many things have gotten better, many other things are purposefully designed not to last.

That smells a lot like an urban legend. It has all the earmarks: It happened somewhere away from you, it's an outrageous thing to do, you don't recall "whounnit," but they were some unnamed authority. And it would be trivial to prove, with some basic lab equipment - the sort that rival companies have lots of, but nobody can point to any actual source of such proof, despite the considerable compeitive advantage that can be had from proving our competition has committed a crime (and yes, it would be, in most countries, certainly the US, unless it's clearly stated on the packaging).

http://pinktentacle.com/2010/01/secr...fter-warranty/

"Despite the decades of rumors and speculation, nobody has ever proven the existence of the Sony timer. Skeptics argue that if such timers actually existed, a rival company would likely have found one and made it public. With this in mind, the Sony timer is widely considered an urban legend."

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_timer

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/technolog...ll-switch.html

"Of course, the "Sony Timer" has never been proved and there’s no evidence that it’s anything other than a Japanese urban legend. "

Washing machines, of course, all have timers in them; that's how they work.

I've got light bulbs that old, too, and the oldest light bulb in continuous use is in Livermore, California (and 110 years of continuous use).

I'd ask where you get those, except I stopped using filament bulbs years ago. When I did though, they generally lasted between a month and two-three months depending on brand and price. I've certainly never had one last even remotely close to a year if in daily use.

While I can't say nothing about sony, the usage of a 1500 pages counter in Epson printers is proven.
