Half-Blood Prince is the slowest of the HP series. It's mostly back-story and not much actually happens until the end.

I am currently reading Sharpe's Tiger by Bernard Cornwell. I've seen most of the UK TV series and it's quite a good TV series. So far the book is good.

Quote:
The first of Richard Sharpe’s Indian adventures, pitting him against the sinister Tippoo Sultan in the siege of Seringapatam, 1799. Like most of the Sharpe novels this one is based on a real campaign, and almost all of the actions described in the book really did take place. Sharpe begins this novel as a private and his worst enemy is not the Tippoo, nor even the Tippoo’s professional strongmen who had interesting ways of putting prisoners to death, but Sergeant Obadiah Hakeswill who will continue to harass Sharpe all through the Indian novels.
This is the first book in the Sharpe Series in chronological order.

I really enjoyed the Sharpe series. They're great fun and you get to learn a bit of history.

The first few chronologically were written much later - and were in fact filmed as sequels rather than prequels, for the TV version (which I never saw much of, myself) - but it all ties up quite nicely.

I've just finished a re-read of the first 2 books in L.E. Modessit's "Recluse" fantasy series: "The Magic of Recluse", and "The Towers of the Sunset". Excellent. I'd forgotten just what a good series this is.

The island nation of Recluse is controlled by "order masters", who work with the magical powers of order to achieve their goals. Opposing them, on the mainland, are magicians who use the opposing force of chaos. Lerris, a young man, has to leave Recluse because he is bored by the perfection of life there, and threatens the order of society. "The Magic of Recluse" tells the story of his adventures, and how he must make the decision about whether to embrace the powers of order or chaos.

"The Towers of the Sunset" is set hundreds of years earlier, and tells the story of the founding of Recluse.

Excellent - highly recommended. I'm going to carry on with this series; it's many years since I last read them.

I read them in chronological order, too. It was just Sharpe's Fury that was written too late for me.

Did I really just read that you aren't reading in published order?! The world must be coming to an end!

Which was an OK edition, but nothing stood out for me.

Next I did something very unusual. I bought a book. You know - one made of cardboard and paper. In fact, a second-hand hardback of Silks by Dick Francis et al. for 30p ($0.50). While the ebook would have cost me £4.99 ($8).

I read it quickly. An average Dick Francis novel. Perhaps it's a bit harsh to say so, but almost a parody of a Dick Francis novel.

Next: Skeleton Dance by Aaron Elkins

This is the last of the Gideon Oliver novels I bought in a Fictionwise sale back in April.

The only way the world would be coming to an end would be if Amazon decided to sell ePub eBooks.

Just finished The Kill Artist by Daniel Silva and it was excellent. And I have the whole rest of the series in front of me. Woo Hoo!

Until now, I've never read the words...

50 Shades of Grey and excited in the same sentence.
