Just finished "Captains Courageous" by Rudyard Kipling. It was pretty good. Kind of like a Robert Heinlein juvenile on a fishing boat instead of a spaceship.

Now reading F&SF March 2006 by Spilogale authors. I think I'm just going to carry on through to the end of the backlog (the May issue is the last). |

I finished HP and the Prisoner of Azkaban in a day. All characters are likeable, except HP.
Now I'm reading Colum McCann's Let the Great World Spin. |

Just finished Crusoe's Daughter by Jane Gardam - as true of all of Gardam's works - a powerfully, beautifully, elegantly written novel - detailing the life of a truly odd but intriguing woman, the orphan Polly Flint and her series of bizarre homes. In her Forward, Gardam claims this as her personal favorite of all the books she's written - even though it won no prizes and did not sell well. Her love shows in her writing, as she creates a lonely girl child on a lonely shore line. Polly discovers the book Robinson Crusoe at an early age, and models her life after that of its hero. Themes of isolation, self-discovery, self-reliance, etc. run through this novel, as Polly continues to try to live her life according to Crusoe - an increasingly difficult endeavor as her life spans the two world wars.
My personal favorite scene describes Polly meeting the "Wolfs" (sic.) while she is living in a country house hosting salons for the indigent literarti. Her description of Virginia and Leonard Woolf is spot-on. An odd but affecting read. Highly recommended. |

Well, it's targeted at the same audience, certainly. But it's not "space opera", it's "Fisherman's Opera" if you will.
