PRS-650 - Covers Not Showing?

This afternoon I added several books via Calibre ... but the covers didn't show up.

I went back into Calibre, re-downloaded all the covers [in a smaller size, in case size was a problem] and "converted" each one. However, when I loaded them onto my reader, the covers still don't show up.

Now, I realize that this is a minor annoyance ... but an annoyance nonetheless.

Any idea why these specific covers aren't showing up? [They show up fine in Calibre ... ]

This is the first time that the download cover/covert hasn't worked to have the covers show up on the reader ...

Anyone have any ideas? My next idea is to convert the book with cover into another format and then reconvert them back to epub. Don't know if that will work ... but ...

Thanks

Mary

Go back to the original ePub, not the converted ones.

Install the Modify ePub plugin.

Go to the edit metadata and put in the cover image you want.

Change the output profile to tablet.

Use the Modify ePub plugin to insert/change the cover and it should work fine on your 650.

I'm glad for this tip, too. I find that in the past I have had to save to disk as a single file, so that the image would be included in the epub. It never transferred to the sony.

This thread is rather confusing and requires clarification, I think.

If by 'covers' you mean the thumbnail covers which are displayed on the Home screen and in Sony device booklists, then calibre should always send thumbnail covers when sending new books (all formats, DRM and non-DRM) if you customise the Sony device plugin correctly, i.e. via Preferences - Plugins - Device Interface plugins - SONY or SONY PRST1 - Customize plugin then check the box Upload separate cover thumbnails ... This is a one-time only task requiring no further action for individual books. Once it's done, it's done forever.

However, if 'cover' means page 1 of an individual epub, then, yes, the Modify Epub plugin or a calibre conversion can be used to achieve the required result.

If you are aiming to use the cover as a standby image then you may need to get the 'page 1 cover' correct. The 'cover as Sony standby image' feature is available
  • as standard on a PRST1
  • as part of the PRSPlus custom firmware on earlier models (PRS505 onwards)
Alternatively, for 'cover as standby image', my old calibre Copy Cover plugin will still work without worrying what format the book is in, whether it's DRM or not, or what cover (if any) is actually on page 1. This plugin is not as convenient as the PRSPlus option, but is an option for those who are not comfortable customising their PRSx50.

Sorry I'm not understanding correctly. How do we install this "modify Epub" plugin? I cant find it anywhere in the plugin settings.

The first thing to do, if you haven't already, is to put the icon for the main 'Plugin Updater' onto one of your toolbars/menus. It is the "one Plugin to rule them all". It's icon is a small green jigsaw piece

If you need to do this Prefs - Toolbar - Click to choose toolbar or menu and select one of the items in the drop-down list e.g. 'The main toolbar'.

Find the Plugin Updater icon in the left-hand list and click the right-arrow in the central column to move it to the bottom of the right-hand list, which contains a list of all the actions currently on your main toolbar. You can then highlight it and use the up/down arrows on the right to position it more carefully. Finally Apply and Close. The new icon will be on your main toolbar. This is a one-time action.

Now click on the Plugin Updater icon. By default you'll get a list (if any) of your existing plugins with an update available. If you don't have any existing plugins then choose All or Not installed from the drop-down menu and you'll get a list of available plugins. Highlight the one called 'Modify Epub' and click the Install button in the left-hand corner. Then follow the on-screen instructions.

Hope this helps

P.S. Once you've got the hang of adding new plugins, don't forget to browse some of the others on offer. There's some really useful stuff in there.

Ok I managed to get it to work. I had to update my version of Calibre first. Thanks very much for your clear explanation. Do you have any suggestions for must-have plugins? I mainly use Calibre simply to de-DRM and transfer books to and from my Sony. I thought the Goodreads plugin might be nice but I don't know if there is any other plugins which would totally re-invent my reading experience.
