Batteries that recharge in less than a minute!
Now here is something that I have been dreaming off for a long time. Let us hope it can really be commercialized.
http://www.engadget.com/2012/08/15/k...echarge-times/ About time for some new battery technologies. Last edited by HansTWN; 08-16-2012 at 03:51 AM. |

It'd be nice, but I'm far less interested in charging time than I am in depletion time.

Be bloody handy for electric cars though.

Remember, one thing is to be able to recharge a battery in a second. The other problem is actually feeding the battery that much energy.
It might not be a problem with small mobile batteries, but for cars, it's still going to take some time, albeit less time. |

For ereading you can have much of the same effect by using replaceable batteries, that
you charge outside of the ereader. Then the time that matters is only the time it takes to swap out the used batteries with a charged set. With my Jetbook Lite it's only a couple of minutes. With most modern chargers once the batteries are charged the charger goes into trickle charge mode, so there is no need to be concerned about when the actual charging is completed. You can just remove them from the charger whenever you get around to it. The amount of time that requires your involvement is minimal, as is the interruption in your ereading. Luck; Ken |

With some high grade solar panels on the roof and bonnet you might even be able to stretch current distance limits. It will probably take another ten years but both Ford and Nissan seem really serious about developing EVs.

http://www.teslamotors.com/ http://www.windingroad.com/articles/...tesla-model-s/ A friend of mine owns one of their earlier Roadster and it is a hoot to drive. Really different from an internal combustion vehicle. Battery tech isn't really here for a mainstream family car (battery pack $price$) but LiIon batteries are good placeholders for now. The area where recharge time is important is in commercial (or public) recharging stations; once you have enough driving range in the battery pack for day-to-day driving (100-200 miles/150-300Km) most users can get by with overnight charging to top off the battery as most users will rarely exceed the 100 mile mark in one day. (If they do they really shouldn't be looking at current EVs. ![]() At this point in EV development what we most need is *cheaper* batteries that don't catch fire: http://blogs.wsj.com/drivers-seat/20...er-karma-fire/ |

Tesla aren't really available outside the US, perhaps not even outside California?

Toyota is first to market with the 2013 RAV4 EV. http://www.forbes.com/sites/jasonfog...and-effective/ Tesla sells their cars all over the US (they're not california-only) and the Roadster was sold internationally from the beginning (UK, Australia, Europe) but being essentially an exotic rather than a mainstream car that's a different story. (They actually flew technicians around for house calls on some cars.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tesla_Roadster |

I want an uber-capacitor that can hold a charge for weeks and can be juiced up by lightning strikes during thunderstorms when one occurs.
