It is for text, but not for images. Images are brighter and more pleasing on the Galaxy. YMMV.

Display quality is far more complicated than "how many pixels." There is color temperature, color gamut, brightness, surface reflectivity (glare), bleed between pixels, pixel interpolation (striped RGB or other layout) and active area (how much dark space around each pixel), viewing distance (does monkey hold 4" display at exactly same distance as 3.5"?), anti-aliasing (either in software or with Mr blurry filter), and more.

Thinking about this list, it seems to me that the One Device to Rule Them All might be considered in terms of which Realm it's ruling - Pocket, Home or Travel. With that in mind, my own selections for the One Device would be:
But of course, my selections are Applefied. What would be the selections in the Bizarro Unive...er....Android Universe? |

But that would eliminate the transgressive nature of the experience. I mean, you have to be TOTALLY naked. Which is how I seem to feel without my iphone. Heck, sometimes I DELIBERATELY go out without my iphone, just to be deviant, and people point at me, and widen their eyes, and girls fling themselves at me. (Of course, the girls part happens all the time anyway...)

Well, my phone is no match my to my odyssey for reading ,or to my cannon S100 for photos.
Totally replaced the mp3 / video player though. Specific devices are here to stay, even if their market share goes down. As long as they have some added value to multipurpose devices, there will be some people interested in them. If only because they don't give a damm about the other functions. |

At the same time, when it became necessary to verify who had the most RBIs in a career (Hank Aaron, of course) the iphone came in handy. So when I go out to take pictures, I take my Pentax. But I hardly ever use my Pentax to look up baseball stats... And it's the same for reading. I don't do much longform reading on my iphone, because when I know I'm going to be in a situation where I can do such reading, I take my T1, which takes really lousy pictures. So it seems to me that for the most part, you can have One Device and mediocrity, or Several Devices and excellence. Most of the time, in situations where you have to lug things around if you want to have them when you need them, good enough is good enough. If not, plan ahead & bring a dedicated device. |

I am more of a 2 devices to rule them all kind of guy. Iphone is typically on me as well as either my kindle or nook, depending which I am reading from at the time. Even at home, it is typically those two devices used the most. I have a 10" tablet that barely sees usage tho. The iPhone does accompany me on walks in a holster and turned to airplane mode so it becomes solely a music player.

I have an HTC EVO 4G LTE smartphone, which has an almost five inch HD screen. It also has a very good camera, comparable to a mid-range point and click. Until this phone, I didn't see smartphones ever becoming a "one device to do most everything when away from home" device. With this phone? I no longer carry a tablet, and I'm using it for a camera almost exclusively. With dropbox, when I take pictures while we're out, by the time I get home they're already on my computer.
I do still carry my Kindle Touch, though. I read on my tablet at night after my husband goes to sleep, so I don't disturb him, and that's fine, but in a well lit area I prefer the ease of use of the Kindle. It fits better in my hands for reading, is easier to turn pages, etc. Plus, only having to charge it every couple of weeks is a huge bonus. This cellphone has a phenomenal battery -- I stream internet radio most of the day, talk on the phone, check email and facebook and twitter and goodreads (and make brief responses), let moderated posts through on my blogs, etc., and still have plenty of battery left over at the end of the day. If I don't stream music I can go three days on a charge, streaming music means I can go about a day and a half, so I generally charge it at night, just to be on the safe side. |
