From what I've seen in version 2.0 there are 4 cover sizes: FULL, GRID, LIST and SHELF.

On mine I have N3_LIBRARY_FULL, N3_LIBRARY_GRID and N3_LIBRARY_LIST for sideloaded ePubs.

I also have some N3_FULL which they appear to be kepub previews. And there are some N3_LIBRARY_SHELF that also appear to be kepubs. And there appear to be some N3_SOCIAL_CURRENTREAD. These and the N3_FULL have dates from last year. As I did a factory reset today, I suspect these are put on by the original firmware. And I suspect they aren't used with FW 2.0.x.

I suppose that in saying only the first three types are on there, it is because I have been concentrating on the sideloaded books. The covers for kepubs are beyond my control so I ignore them.

That's probaby it: I've been altering my sideloaded epubs so that the touch treats them as kepubs. That's why I needed all four sizes. The problem is that if one of those is missing (for example list) and you try to see the book in the library than the touch replaces all of them with the default ugly cover

That is interesting because if an epub is missing one with FW 2.0.x, then it is generated automatically. I might have a play so I can see for myself.

And there would be a performance hit on the Touch each time these images are used. The N3_FULL is used for the sleep screen The others are used when browsing the library. Each time they are displayed, they will have to be dynamically resized. That will slow things down and if you have lot of books, it is already getting slower. I listed the sizes for all except on of the images above. I missed "N3_LIBRARY_SHELF.parsed" which is 40*60.

Also, the script is for pre 2.0.0 firmware. The touch only generates three cover sizes in 2.0.0 and later.
This is just a hack which I wrote for my own purposes, and only posted because I was asked. I had hoped to make clear that it isn't really intended for public consumption. I had a note about the image sizes in the comments, it was partly done deliberately because I didn't want to have to work out the relative point size for each image size to keep the text a constant size relative to the cover. The space wasn't an issue for me as I only have 900 or so books on the device, which took only half the space - even with the larger images, and I hadn't noticed any slowdown.

Nevertheless. Here is an amended version. It might be slightly faster browsing the library but I can't really tell. The one big delay for me, going from reading a book to the homescreen, is still very slow. I have made a rough guess as to the pointsize for each image. It isn't perfect, but it works.

Incidentally, a big advantage of the new firmware is that it checks if there is an image before it generates a new one. Previously, this script would only work if the kobo had generated all the images previously. Effectively you had to run this twice (unmounting it in between) because when a new book was added to the database it would overwrite the cover image you had generated.

Thanks for sharing your script! I hope you don't mind but I made some changes to it so that rather than creating a cover with the author and title it uses an existing image file. It resizes and desaturates the image then places the 4 different images in the .kobo/images directory. I know next to nothing about bash scripting so having yours to work from really helped. I'm posting it in case anyone else wants to use it or if anyone has any suggestions for improvement (I'm sure there are plenty).

The script is here (note that I took out the ^M characters so it would run on my mac. Not sure if that makes it unable to run on windows):
