My kids use the iPad drawing programs and still draw on paper tons too. Plenty of artwork. So much I don't know what to do with it all. I doubt many kids are only using the iPad to do art.

It isn't just kids that you have to watch, it's grandparents as well.

Joke of the week in one of our local papers.

I was visiting my niece and her family last night when I asked if I could borrow a newspaper. "This is the twenty-first century, old man." she said, rather sniffily. "We don't waste money on newspapers. Here, you can borrow my iPad."

I tell you what, that blowfly never knew what hit it!"...

The ipad has been a godsend for my my 4 year old nephew , there are so many apps on there that helps him with his autism, and as a springboard from the ipad he is slowly learning how to use a laptop, and with the ipad he can communicate with others much better than he could with voice/handwritting.

Yeah someone got one of my kids something like that for Christmas, but the apps were really expensive. Look into the price of apps PLUS the price of the tablet.

That wouldn't work for me. My 2-year old would say "DaDa", hand it to me, take my device and say "mine".

Yes, cool; but software is $25 a pop. Long term costs will far exceed buying a tablet and loading it with free to $0.99 to $1.99 and up apps.
  • VTech InnoTab: $60 + 3 x $25 game cartridges = $135
  • Nook Color Refurb: $129 + free root + unlimited free apps = $129
  • Kindle Fire Refurb: $169 + no rooting + unlimited free apps = $169
  • Asus Nexus 7: $199 + no rooting + unlimited free apps = $199
Wait for the new Kindle Fire to be released (probably Nov; maybe sooner) and you should be able to get a new gen one Fire in the $149 range. I paid $149 for a new Fire from Walmart last Feb. I gifted it to a family member.

Personally, I'd recommend a Kindle Fire if it can be had for $149.

If I ever get a job, I'm thinking of getting my kids each a Nexus 7 - but then, they're 20 and 21.

aaah, just plopped on the sofa after a busy day.
As for art my little munchkin was not too keen on it as all he produced was a big blob in the middle of the paper. All the same but for color. I had to practice with him the real thing as in holding the pen and drawing on paper. OF COURSE I gave him capacitive stylus a while back but his Royal Highness refused it. Finger drawing = easy, stylus = mama, bugger off. Only recently he became involved in coloring so my office wall is filling up.
My darling sweetheart was worn out today after 1,5 hour in swimming pool and also was shooed into the garden with his bakugans or whatever they are these days. And on ipad I was asked today to read him a book about heavy building machinery, buldozers, cranes and somesuch. The big one was shooed out of the house for a beer with his colleague, little one is asleep, oh the paradise of peace and quiet now

wax crayon + ipad =

It will come with a couple of games, but after that most of them are $25 each. None are inexpensive.

Not downloadable.
Cartridge-based. $25 per cartridge.

It's not *bad*, but it's not the most cost-effective solution...
Just make sure whichever system you go for has the kind of apps and games you want.

Can't the argument be made against video games (I was raised with video game consoles and there was similar huge concerns over them at the time)?
