Piracy of books on Amazon Kindle
In the last few Days I have come across a few books on Amazon Kindle UK that have been pirated without the publishers and copyright holders permission . To get through to Amazon is quite difficult and . One publisher told me that he had written to Amazon about this some time ago and had no reply . Most of these publishers are small very specialist publishers who can ill afford the Piracy. The company I work for has now decided to put their books up quicker on Kindle than they planned to.

We are a very small publishing house and we are not totally ebook savvy . When we saw some of the most popular Islamic titles being pirated . We decided to go ahead and launch them quickly using their tools to convert the books and put them up on kindle

As the 1984 fiasco showed, Amazon *will* respond. Might not be instantly but it won't take an eternity either.

I know in the US Amazon will respond to a DMCA takedown notice--does anyone know the equivalent method in the UK?

They said they are investigating it and we should hear from them in 5 working days its still up and you can still buy it on line. We also found out that if your books have been put on line illegally on websites you have to prove that you own the copyright and why the books are on line. We have never put our books on a website but we know they have been pirated both in paper and also on sites like scribe etc. We had a letter from a site when we asked them to take it down and he refused as he got it from another site. Its a bit frustating but it will all be sorted out God Willing.

One minute you see your books being pirated on Amazon and you have a hard time getting them to take it down and the next time you have a hard time proving you own the copyright etc to get your books put on Amazon .

This is quite a serious charge you are making. Without the names of these books, I am going to withhold judgment.

Who is Amazon giving the royalties to in lieu of the legal copyright holder?

If an actual author or translator due a share of the royalties can be made available for interviews, I would think mainstream media will be interested.

You don't need to be American to use DMCA, and any reputable non-American company will act on it. Amazon UK pretends to be based in Luxembourg anyway, so you would need to find a law that applies to that country if DMCA didn't work.

There's the Intellectual Property Office, but it seems that the Office of Fair Trading is usually the one that does the actual enforcing.

I would find it rather surprising if a non-US company were to act on a DMCA notice which had no legal standing whatsoever.

One might regard is simply as notification that a site is hosting illegal content. I'd have thought that any reputable site would act on such notification, provided that the content really was illegal. There are of course a great many spurious take-down notices issued: MR gets them not infrequently (and MR is not a US company).
