I started Phillip K. Dick's The Crack in Space but will probably not end up reading much more of it. It's far more political commentary than science-fiction, and I'm not really caring for it much. Instead I've started Stephen Baxter's Titan. I always enjoy his books, and this one is no exception.

I just finished some freebies on my TBR list by Stephanie Bond that were cute, fun, quick reads. Perfect for start and stop reading or when you need a quick smile.

I have two started:

A Thousand Miles Up the Nile (Illustrated) by Amelia B. Edwards (uploaded by HarryT - mobi/prc - ePub)

In the winter of 1873–1874, accompanied by several friends, Edwards toured Egypt, discovering a fascination with the land and its cultures, both ancient and modern. Journeying southwards from Cairo in a hired dahabiyeh (manned houseboat), the companions visited Philae and ultimately reached Abu Simbel where they remained for six weeks.

Having once returned to the UK, Edwards proceeded to write a vivid description of her Nile voyage, publishing the resulting book in 1876 under the title of "A Thousand Miles up the Nile". Enhanced with her own hand-drawn illustrations, the travelogue became an immediate bestseller.

Edwards' travels in Egypt had made her aware of the increasing threat directed towards the ancient monuments by tourism and modern development. Determined to stem these threats by the force of public awareness and scientific endeavour, Edwards became a tireless public advocate for the research and preservation of the ancient monuments and, in 1882, co-founded the Egypt Exploration Fund (now the Egypt Exploration Society) with Reginald Stuart Poole, curator of the Department of Coins and Medals at the British Museum. Edwards was to serve as joint Honorary Secretary of the Fund until her death some 14 years later.

With the aims of advancing the Fund's work, Edwards largely abandoned her other literary work to concentrate solely on Egyptology. In this field she contributed to the ninth edition of the Encyclopædia Britannica, to the American supplement of that work, and to the Standard Dictionary.

I thought this one would be interesting, as I read the pbooks of The Romanovs: the Final Chapter by Robert K. Massie and Anastasia: The Riddle of Anna Anderson by Peter Kurth. I haven't read far enough to know yet.

A brief description:

It's a steampunk novel set in Victorian England, the first of a trilogy (the other two books are "The Dark Volume" and "The Chemickal Marriage").

The main characters are Miss Celestial Temple, a strong-minded heiress from one of the "islands" somewhere warm whose father owns a plantation worked by slaves, "Cardinal" Chang a mysterious assassin-for-hire who is neither a cardinal nor Chinese, and Doctor Abelard Svenson, a somber naval officer from a German principality charged with escorting his rather-dense Prince to England to meet with his arranged-marriage fiancee who is the daughter of a powerful British businessman.

The story is triggered off by a letter to Miss Temple from her betrothed, Roger Bascombe (a minor government official), breaking off their engagement without any explanation and requesting that she never contact him again. Miss Temple, being curious and enraged, decides to find out why Bascombe changed his mind; under an assumed identity she pursues him. In the meantime, Chang has been hired to kill a military officer at a country house party, only to find that the officer has already been murdered. We meet Dr. Svenson for the first time when he attempts to rescue the Prince from what he thinks is a kidnapping attempt. The lives of the three of them intersect and they realize that they have common cause against a cabal of powerful interests who are creating a special glass out of indigo clay that seems to store the memories of people - very important people.

The story contains a shady Comte, fearful scientific experiments, mind control, strange blue glass books, airships, multiple murders, alchemists, a dead painter, horrific murders, a sensual Italian countess, whores-without-hearts-of-gold, unscrupulous politicians, mysterious indigo clay, dead Lords, secret passages, corrupt military and a whole host of unsavory characters who are Up To No Good.

I just popped in to say that the Library of Congress' "Talking Book Library" for the blind is really working well for me. It has been 2 yrs since I read the Discworld books, and I had a craving. The audio versions are just as satisfying as the print versions. And it makes me miss all of you.

I just finished Mud and Gold by Shayne Parkinson (Smashwords) - highly riveting sequel to Sentence of Marriage, and second in the series "Promises to Keep"

I am taking a quick break from the series to read Boomerang Bride by Fiona Lowe.

Dixie! Good to see you. Your talk of audiobooks Crusader's talk of Mars are timely as I just got a notice from the library that the audiobook of "Princess of Mars" is available for me to checkout.

I spent the weekend re-reading Sandman or I would have finished The Hangman's Daughter, which is really quite good (and I'm about 50% don there).

I loved rereading Sandman this weekend and my reread of The Hobbit the other week. I may have to reread LOTR and Earthsea as well. I love revisiting old friends.
