Quite right! And I never got to post "The dog it was that died"!

A beautifully written book - one of a very few for which the movie version was (IMHO) equally beautiful. I think Diana Rigg, as the Mother Superior, was superb - esp. with her speech about being married to God - even though it wasn't in the novel.

I've never seen the movie, obviously something I need to remedy. I think the book is wonderful.

Close. There were several movie versions and while it's not Fairbanks in the most famous, it has that feel.

I figured that would do it. Still a goodie! My pbook copy is inscribed 1910 and I like that over a hundred years later, that particular copy still gives pleasure.

My last couple have obviously been too easy for people of the calibre who frequent MR, so here's something that I think will be a bit more obscure:

"X stripped off his faded shorts and his green drill shirt, and reached for a bowl of ochre mud which had been softened to a pliant paste with water. He smeared the mud over his face, neck and shoulders until his sunburnt skin was dyed a deep coppery red."
