Well (speaking here as android user mind you) android IS safe, the biggest security flaw is the user, not the OS. As to hardware durability, it's all made in china.

The big plus side of android, no need of iTunes Question that might have it's importance, what PC os are you using ?

Android is customisable. Dont like the keyboard ? change it ! don't like sms app ? change it ! You just can't do that with iOS.

It all comes down to personal 'experience' (what you call ignorance), those Google reviews are also not much more than paid- for articles at worst and personal experiences at best. It is all down to how you use and abuse your personal belongings. I have an iPod one (4gb) that I started using in 2001 and finally 'retired' it in 2009 when I got my first iPhone (a 3GS). Recently sold it on ebay for £172.83 after 3 years of absolutely flawless usage. Been using a 4S since April, have had no problems whatsoever. I have a retired DV500 iMac sitting in the attic wrapped up in covers. We used it for a decade, the whole family did, and it still works and does basic tasks flawlessly. I should have faith in Apple products after these experiences.

Eh, no? Why do you think I thought something that stupid to be the case? But it shows more than one example of security issues and HarryT said he had followed this issue and had not seen any. I thought it worth pointing out since I have met to many Apple product users that think the products have been without problems.

Just so you know, this is a fallacy. At least the fallacy of generalizing from one case. Maye also a fallacy related to anectdotal evidence.

No phone is absolutely safe. Statistically, all phones are pretty secure. But if it absolutely matters, the iPhone is statistically *far* safer than Android alternatives.

The iPhone and most high-end phones have Gorilla Glass. But it prevents scratching, not breaking.

Maybe. But to claim that you have to look at real incidents (not just possible incidents with malware that could do something) and I have really not seen that statistics. But my important point was just that they exist for iPhone also since I meet so many people claiming that they do not exist or that each release of iPhone software is bug free.

It should help a bit for breaking but of course it is true that iPhone were the phones with most insurance incidents because of breaking glass.

That may of course simply be due to the fact that there are more iPhones around than any other single model of smartphone.

I think the empirical observation I saw was compensated for that. iPhones did at least break very easily when you dropped it. Especially the first model with glass on both sides.

I think the first "all glass" one was the iPhone 4, which is the model I have. It's always seemed a bit silly to me to carry around an all-glass object without a case to protect it, so mine's always been in a "gell" case.

I just upgraded from a DroidX to a Samsung Galaxy SIII and I'm loving it.

Slightly bigger and better screen, very readable.
Battery life is about the same (daily charge needed)
Sound is great.

Its actually silly to make a device that primary purpose is to be carried around with you to be made of glass. Its funny how many people when Iphone 4 came out that were like that such a beautiful device and it looks so good etc. But what's the use of it looking so good if you have to hide it under a cover or use a bumper to make it work properly.
And then people rave about Apple design when its most successful product has such basic design flaws.

I would always carry a mobile phone in a case. Always have done. So personally it doesn't bother me in the slightest.

I just told a guy in another forum whining about scratches on his Galaxy SIII earpiece exactly this.

These things are tools, not art. They should be engineered to do the job, if they can look pretty doing it, then great, but that's not the primary purpose.
