The whole thing, so far. The restore worked, took me back to the proper "this is a new Kobo" page. I plugged it in, and Step 3 of 4 is actually finding my books and adding them.

So yay!

edit: Oh, and I just noticed the karma thing--I thought you were talking metaphorically for a moment there, but I just realised you meant the "karma" thing. I'm not sure what it means, but thanks! =D

Due to the nature of e-ink to have a clock always showing the real time would mean to refresh the screen every minute, so that would probably not be advisable. As I still use the older firmware, my clock while reading is still the way it was before 2.0

Good. As I thought about what we had tried and what you had written, it occurred to me that you hadn't talked about doing a factory reset. There are a few ways to do them, but the one I gave you works when you can't do it from within the reader itself.

I understand the limitations of e-ink. However, there are plenty of examples where Kobo themselves use dynamic content (spinners, etc) where a full refresh is not required including of course swapping full pages of text up to six times whilst reading. I agree that leaving a clock on the home screen would become messy after a while, but I didn't even consider that anyone would actually be on the home screen long enough for refresh to become an issue.

I admit it may be personal preference but I still think a digital clock would be preferable to a button. However, clearing the screen real estate in the top right hand corner like you have would mean that pressing the button would be much more accessible without risk of activating wifi etc

When you swipe down, the page is put into Select mode.

Then, if you press on a single word, you get the dictionary. If you swipe along several words, you get the selection handles.

I only say this because:
a) Clearly your KT has working wifi otherwise you wouldn't be able to see the presence of *any* other networks.
b) I once had a similar issue on a laptop that used an intel wireless chipset that categorically refused to connect to any "available" network including my own. Yet when I manually entered all that data (as per connecting to a hidden SSID) - boomshanka.
(This problem was permanently rectified when I binned the intel and changed to a card with an atheros chipset - a choice you don't have with the KT).
Thanks for your suggestions but i went ahead and did a factory reset and then manually installed the last 1.9.1.7 upgrade. It is so much faster and more stable then 2 I have to say I'd forgotten just what a difference. Unfortunately still no internet so i guess i might have to take it back for a replacement. Firmware 2 is really pathetic. The shelves are good but more care should have been made before unleashing what, for most of us who didn't know any better, was an involuntary upgrade. I have spent hours trying to sort it out and simply don't have time to waste on dodgy equipment.

  • While pressing and holding the Home button, turn your eReader over and locate the small hole on the back.
  • Slide one end of the paperclip into the hole.
  • Press gently until you feel a click. Don't release the Home button yet.
  • You'll see a flashing light next to the power button.
  • Remove the paperclip.
  • When your eReader says "Restoring..." let go of the Home button.
  • When your eReader finishes restoring, connect your it to your computer using your USB cable.
  • Open Kobo Desktop, and sync your eReader.

PS: If you have been playing with this for several hours, you may want to let the reader charge for a bit before you go any further with resets.
That's what I needed!

@taming and Corpsegoddess: Thank you very much!
Corpsegoddess for the detailed discription of her (my ) problems and taming for the great help.
I now have a properly working desktop app 3.0.1 and the new firmware 2.0.0 r41166 is running smoothly for the first time!

Does this rather scary sounding update install itself? Last night I was happily reading when my screen became unresponsive, the first time this has happened. My KT is nearly a year old and used daily. Going in and out of sleep mode didn't help so I powered down. On starting up again the KT displayed the egg timer and 'updating'. I gave up watching it and went to sleep. This morning I have an old book on the cover and I'm going to have to search for the book I was reading. I was planning to avoid this update, what do I do now?

The one sure-fire trick I've found for when my Kobo freezes is to plug it in to the USB cable. For some reason, connecting it to my computer seems to unfreeze it every time--I think the need to recognize whether or not I'm going to connect to my PC overrides whatever shenanigans might be happening with the device. Just a piece of friendly FYI.

Thank you Corpegoddess for that useful trick. I'll be sure to remember.

if you upgrade to 2.0.2 (unsupported right now) it seems to fix this problem...http://download.kobobooks.com/firmwa...date-2.0.2.zip

Thanks. When it is supported will it download automatically? I don't want to go near my desktop and have that download the version that's causing issues.
I think my KT is working now but I had to redo my short list and it only shows in shelves now not on the home page. I know I had to set it to do that before, there doesn't seem to be anywhere to do that now. So annoying, I didn't want this wretched update. I don't have the time for it just now. Can you stop auto update?

Not if you want to continue to use the Desktop App. If you don't want/need the Desktop App you can up(down)grade back to 1.9.17. Using the Desktop App with the Kobo plugged it and a previous firmware will initiate the update to the next highest firmware. You cannot load books from the Desktop App without first doing the update. I'm pretty sure the designer of this is a some sort of fascist dictator. There's just no reason to be forced to update like this just to load your books on your reader. Especially since the desktop app provides no other functionality between it and your reader other than loading your books and updating the firmware. I've never had a device where I HAD to upgrade the firmware to be able to continue using it. An automatic check yes, automatic forced update, no.

Not only if you use the desktop app. If you sync over wifi the update gets downloaded too.
